Ecotec 7000 RPM project
Monday, May 09, 2005 7:52 AM
since it seems i dont make a significant amount of boost til 5500 when I shift at 6500 it knocks me back down to 4000 and the charger isnt making enough rpms to boost which means that it lags until i reach boost again, now my thoery is this I set it to 7000 which is fairly safe this means when I shift I should more boost to work with in the powerband that concerns me. What are the proper mods that I will need to do internally to make it stable to 7000rpm, Im thinking at least valves and valve springs

I would say pistons and rods as well.................Rod! Probably a copper head gasket too.
Iff that won't work try the matrix of leadership!

yea ill have the forged pistons and rods , ill be going with the MLS gasket when the head is off

Just out of curiosity, how are you going to reset the redline to 7000rpm in the computer. I am thinking the lifters and valve springs will need to be beefed up a bit.

^^^
doesnt the msd ignition have a changeable redline?

how come the charger doesn't make full boost until late in the rpm ? I thought that with a s/c you didn't have lag.

That is why I asked...I don't know. How does the MSD override the PCM limits?

well for higher rpm generally you want better lifters and valvesprings. Rods are the biggest known weak point in the eco so you're definitely on the right track there. But i do agree with the above, what charger are you running that isn't boosting til 5500? RSM?

I dont know what the point of that is, you don't have to spool a supercharger, its going to give you proportional power throughout the powerband and your not going to gain anything by having a higher redline unless you do some more work to the engine than just upgrading internals.

it doesnt.

right now my redline is set to 6250 which is the lowest on the msd setting...

however the computer in the car still has the redline at 6000. unless you get a computer reflash to raise the red/limit msd cant do it as the car will be dominant.

also for parts, basically all thats mentioned, but try to get quality LIGHTER parts... you will get the revs up quicker. titanium and stuff like that ISNT needed, but try to lighten up any parts you can such as the pistons, and possibly rods... and crank of course..

but also DONT sacrifice structural integrity in doing so. the retainers and locks for the valve springs can be gotten titanium... but all that is gonna cost.

also remember, if it rotates... lighten it.

Have you tried just reducing the pulley size??

Also, I think I read somewhere that the physical rev limit of the eco was 6750 or something like that, it isn't designed to rev much higher, plus it looses power after 6000 or so.

There MUST be other options than raising the cut off! Intercooler? You already got a large TB, do you have a proper intake to feed the SC ?

it loses power after 6000 if it is stock. With the supercharger it should still be making power.

maybe get a turbo that spools up quicker at a lower rpm ?

The MSD does not override the PCM redline, as far as how to raise it that is a smiple change in the PCM which a few companies can do, I'm concerned with making it stable to 7000, I believe even stock its good to 8 or 9 but I want to beef it up.

Using an intercooler would be stupid as it would cause a 1-2psi drop which is 10-20 HP LOSS far more than I would lose by heating up the outside temputure by 5-10 degrees which is all a Vortech does.

The vortech has alot of turbo traits to it and it does sort of spool when I shift at 6500 it just comes to 5psi then shoots back down to 4000 then builds again, doesnt stay in boost thats how the centrifigal blowers are. I could spin the blower faster with a bigger pulley housing but I would also need to make a change to the Stage II head by RSM which eliminates the head clearance issue so that they could develop a bigger pulley housing

hey bud,

i am running the rsm stage 1 kit on my 2.4 and i noticed that you said there are a few company's that can raise the factory rev limiter, can you tell me who? i thought the only way you could do it was with a standalone unit? the reason i ask is, i am puting my 2.4 back together and i put forged internals in it with a strong valve train and i was wanting to spin it harder by all means but i thought that you have to buy a standalone to do this. i am running a front mount also.. but i wanted to spin it harder so i can see more boost out of my supercharger...u know how them vortech blowers love high reving.....let me know about them company's bud..thanks

Stand alone setup is the only way to get what you want.
You'll have to have a distributor drive setup (which I'm presently working on, got the parts, need to retool some) off of the intake cam drive which runs the power steering pump (must be removed) and then find some way to get things to work with the crank sensor, cam sensors, etc.
This is where the dilemma is in what I'm trying to do.
More research is at hand and hope answers come soon enough.

for powersteering, could you just use an electric pump?

Possible, but ran cars without it and never had a problem unless you are parking the car.
