Nitro's Dyno results, and something learned.
Wednesday, April 27, 2005 6:19 PM
Well, I finally went to the dyno today after a whole season of spraying the 100 shot. I wanted to make sure I was in the safe area so far as A/F ratio goes so my brand spanking new motor will live a good long life.

The short list of mods that I had on the car for today goes as follows......

-K&N drop in filter
-59mm tb
-Self fabbed 2.25" mandrel bent cat-back with an exhaust cutout just before the factory muffler (the 2.25" pipe is reduced after the cutout to fit the stock muffler)
-Nitrous works single nozzle wet nitrous kit w/bottle heater and rpm window switch.

The first run was done with no nitrous to get a baseline. I wanted to also see how much of that 100 Hp was making it to the ground. Needless to say, the numbers weren't earth shaking. But they were even more dissapointing that expected, 126.48 Hp @ 5200 rpm and 141 ft lbs @ 4200 rpm. The graph for both HP and torque get real shaky right from the beginning and doesn't smooth out until torque peak, and dives down to crap shortly thereafter. Upon further inspection, we discovered that the positive battery terminal was near falling off it was so loose. That in combination with the fact that my basline run showed I was running way rich at about 11:1 give or take since that is pretty shaky too. Interestingly enough, my A/F ratio drops right off the chart rich (below 10:1 just after peak torque) which is probably the real reason for the shaky power delivery and dissapointing numbers. I actually blame the tb, since it is not my finest work, and it leaks ever so slightly enough to throw a CEL for high idle, I'm guessing that the computer isn't too happy about that and throws itself into a open loop way rich program. Time to get real with the tb I guess.

With the baseline run done, I was expecting to be dissapointed again with the dyno run. With a 100 shot, I'd expect to see around 85 of that at the wheels when you figure in drivetrain losses. So when the second run came up just shy of a 90 HP increase, I wasn't suprised. The numbers on the juice were 213.91 Hp and 259.76 ft lbs. Peak torque is pretty much right when the nitrous kicks in, and drops off real quick. My A/F ratio was still piss rich at 11:1 give or take in the 10-12 range. I could live with 12:1, I guess, but I was really hoping for high 12's low 13's in the A/F department. Considering the fact that I have a bottle heater, and I was running bottle pressure at 900 psi, I decided to try to improve my A/F ratio by getting the bottle up to a higher pressure. Since NW reccomends 1000 psi, I figured I should try that and see what I get.
I always ran 900 psi at the track, for an added margin of safety on the 100 shot, but now that I knew I was so rich, I had no problem bumpin it up a notch.

3rd run, last run. I only was willing to pay for the 3 run package, otherwise I would have messed with getting a better baseline with no CEL, which I'm guessing is costing me a good 15 Hp. BS you say? Not so..........

3rd run with 1000 psi bottle pressure got me into the high 12 A/F ratio from 3800 rpm, when the nitrous kicks in, to about 4700 rpm, when it starts going off the chart rich again, but even in that short amount of time in the sweet spot, I made 231.34 Hp, and (hold on to your shorts) 290.19 ft lbs of torque. That's 17 extra Hp, and 30 ft lbs! And all that just from upping the bottle pressure a measly 100 psi!

Point of view #2----- I gained 105 Whp on a 100 shot of spray, so I figure 90 Whp should be about right after all if my baseline weren't pig rich. I hope to get the tb problem fixed and hit the dyno again to vindicate my crappy baseline run. I should have hit about 140 whp or so if my A/F were acceptable. I have the dyno sheet and some video, but I'll upload the vid later. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner, so the sheet will have to wait.

230 Whp Cavalier dyno run

There ya go, took me awhile cause I'm on dial up. It's about a 20 minute upload on my crappy connection.

question, that baseline that you got that was with the cutout open correct???o and how much of a difference is there with the cutout open as opposed to closed???

As a side note, the dyno operator is good friends with a guy who does tuning and he showed me some before/after dyno graphs where he got the A/F ratio to be almost perfectly straight. Pretty impressive. He got 40 extra Hp and over 80 ft lbs from a stock 350 powered 1999 Chevy truck. Can't wait for the software to come out for Cavaliers. Once that happens, I'll be alot more inclined to do a decent nitrous motor build up that puts out more than 300 Whp on the juice.

It was with the cutout opened. I only had 3 runs, and didn't want to waste one by trying to improve my baseline. When I get more $$ and have some quick change parts at hand, I'll probably go back and find the best off juice combo and try to build on that. I have a feeling I could have gained a few more ponies with it shut though. On the street, it feels alot more sluggish with the cutout opened, unless I'm spraying it of course.

karo... i'm thinkin he nailed second so he could skip to fourth gear... i could be wrong though...

I juiced it briefly in second to get the gaseous nitrous out of the lines, then skipped right to 4th gear. I made the run with the vss switch off, so I could rev to redline.

Looking at my graph here, that last run made peak Hp at only 4400 Rpm. It seems to fall on it's face after that. I think I need to insulate my N20 lines to keep liquid going through. My line runs through the firewall right behind the exhaust manifold, so after a few seconds the power starts pulsing a little and the nitrous can't keep up with the fuel. I can probably be making another couple Hp if I can keep that A/F ratio in the acceptable range for longer. I'm down below 10:1 by the time I hit 5500 rpm. I'm missing out on alot of top end power there. Might even be worth another 10 Hp to keep my torque up into those revs.

Nice Jarrett.

My power is the same way. Peaks right when the nitrous is on and falls off after that. I think it has more to do with head, manifold and cat restriction than a hot nitrous line. I'm dynoing on Sunday and going to the track next Friday. Hopefully I'll be catching up to you.

BTW: I ran my nitrous line directly under the car zip-tied to the fuel lines and brought it up right under the steering column. No pulsating issues for me so maybe you could try that.

What engine mods do you have, thats incredible that you are running 100 shot and not blowing up! Nice numbers!

Completely stock engine, save for the copper core NGK TR6's. It's all about the RPM window switch, trust me. The worst thing for running a high shot like that is activating it at too low an Rpm, or letting it shoot past fuel cutoff.

Just got an all in one printer with built in scanner yesterday, so if you wanted to see the dyno sheet, here it is. Check out the A/F ratios listed at the bottom on the graph. And please exuse the light colors on some of the lines, I know they are a little tough to see.

With that amount of torque, you can put diesels to shame man.
Odd base numbers, but awesome spray numbers!
Keep it up man.
