removing air silencer - Performance Forum

Since there seems to be no tech manuals for the ecotecs, I've been wondering what steps there are to removing the dreaded silencer(too bad there's not an option to delete it!!). I'm guessing that it comes out the wheel well and that you probably have to take the wheel off to allow room. From one of the other boards, it sounded like all you needed to do was remove the battery tray and it was below. Those instructions must have been for an earlier version because my tray is part of the car's body. I would be great for any help with this. I'll get a different intake tube as soon as I can get an Xtreme cone from K&N. Thanks, Brad
the air bong?
haha bong
I'd just leave the bong in till you get an intake. Least that's what I would do.

Do 2nd gens have them? What in the flippin hell is an air bong, I'm retarded
All cars have them.
Its basically a randomly twisted tube that is the first part of your intake. Only useful thing it does is help keep water out.
Its part of emmisions control too... makes it harder for air to get in... less in, less out.

its a pita to remove
Not all cars have them. My wife's '91 Tempest with the 3.1 doesn't have a "bong".
Well, thanks for the responses, but I wanted to experiment with the stock box since
I've already dropped in a K&N. I always knew it had an "air bong" on it. I read a Chevy performance mag where they where modding a '03 cav and finally saw what the silencer really looked like. IT was a Godzilla compared to what I had on my '93 Z34. Gotta keep some people happy with not hearing anything from the engine bay I guess. Something else I notice was that the driver's side port seems to only be used for the air intake( wouldn't it hurt the filter's performance a bit if that obstruction isn't removed). So you could run a pool vacuum intake tube from that port to the bottom of the air box or cone filter. I used to do something like that with the Z34 but it was two tubes at the corners of the grill opening to the Xtreme cone(it faced straight ahead). It made a small difference at highway speeds. Just brain storms...
get a saw
and chop off the bottom half of your intake
just below where the filter is
Good job wasting your money on a K&N
K&N is just a name... thats all. The filter I got, Spectra brand, has all the same qualities of a K&N filter, and only cost $20

What does the front of the cone filter look like? I've tried several on the Z34(Weapon R V2, Holley power shot, Accel kool blue, etc.) and for me the Xtreme version of K&N cone filters seem to work the best.

does it come pre oiled?
and w/ the 1,000,000 mile warranty?

Well its the regualr cone filter, then the tips got the dip into it, like an inverted cone filter.

Worked fine without oil, and if i need some, oh boo hoo Ill go get some from school.
And as for the warrenty, Im not gonna drive the car for 1,000,000 miles... and heres what their warenty is...
Quote:
WHO IS COVERED BY WARRANTY:
The original purchaser of a Filtercharger® who has provided proper proof of the original retail purchase and all other requested information.
WHAT IS NOT WARRANTED:
Any Filtercharger® air filter used for any type of racing or competition, any off-road use, custom or modified applications, any non-legal highway use, marine, aircraft or industrial applications. (These units are covered by a one year unlimited mileage warranty.)
Therefor, my warrenty would be void anyway. Not to mention its only covering manufacture defects (I found that on their site, but cant find it again to quote), so that being the case, if you use it and wash it and use it and wash it and use it and wash it and it falls apart... too bad. Anything that has a manufacturing defect can be returned to the place of purchase anyways.

As of yesterday, the silencer is off and it drives better. I had to take to one of the shops I use sometimes and remove both the front wheelwell liner and wheel. There are three bolts that are present: two at the bottom corners and one at the top right corner. The bottom left corner kind of suck alittle but it was worth it. The guys had never really thought this would be much of an improvement which means I was back there removing it with them. The main mechanic(who family ownes a '00, '01, and a '02) was quit impressed by how it acted afterwards, their's will get pulled soon. It seems like I've started kind of a movement with them. Oh by the way, it took us roughly a hour which cost me $17.00. Now I really can't wait to use the aftermarket intake!!
If your gatting an aftermarkt intake, removing your air bong was pretty pointless.
Unless you are getting a body kit or something else that needs to go there.

Not yet, probably not for awhile. I just wanted to see how much different the cav was without it. I think it drives much better, none of that lag you sometimes see near stall speed(auto/torque convertor). RPMs have dropped 50 across the band while cruising at highway speeds. You can now showoff at takeoffs alittle more too. For those who still have the stock box and don't believe me, there's only one real way to find out(it also should have a good "drop-in"). And for those who have short-ram intakes: it needs to go because its in the way of the main air flow path.
