Sharing my air and oil filter improvements

I'm a newb - so while some of this might be beat to death old news - bear with me because I didn't know it.

I gave the lil Cav a little tune up yesterday. It's a 97 with a 2.2L that was at 106k and I have only owned it a month or so - so I figured it wouldn't hurt to throw on the 100k stuff like plugs, O2 sensor, etc.

When I went to the store to get the PF47oil filter, I compared it to a regular smal block chevy PF52 and the threadding and sealing lands were the same - so I went with the bigger filter - I also bought a PF61 but the threading on that one is too big. Either way, I just thought I'd share my find with you guys. I forgot to look at the PF59 threadding - but the seal OD is the same as the PF61 which is why I bought the PF61 instead of that one - not realizing it wouldn't screw on. I'll be looking into the PF59 next time just to see.

For my air filter - I had a brand new K&N unit off of my 99 Yukon that I sold - the great big barrel shaped one, just sitting on the shelf. I removed my battery and airbox from the cav - and it fit right on! All I had to do was shove the stock oval end inside the filter up to where the intake tube starts to be ribbed. The filter ID matches right up with that ribbing OD and its all in the right spots. The filter sits perfectly between the strut tower and the battery and looks like it was made for it - except for it being effin HUGE! I figure if that filter was able to help wake up my 5.7L truck - it oughtta REALLY help my 2.2L Cavalier and it has.

The car sounds MUCH healthier on accelleration, and the seat of the pants feel is GREATLY improved to the point that my social worker wife noticed it right off the bat. On my test drive, I got the car up to operating temperature then got out to see if any part of the filter was hot at all - and even the engine side of it wasn't even warm.

I hope somebody else can be helped out by this - I already had the filter so it was a free mod for me.

Later,

Phlint

Also, the oil filter placement is completely retarded on these cars, but I was able to make it not as bad by using one of them "HAT" type of filter wrenches that just goes onto the "top" of the filter. I used that with a 3/8" rachet and a short extension - and accessed it through the passenger side wheel well. I had that wheel off anyways dong the brakes or I might not have otherwise thought of it.

Again, I hope this helps.

Just so you know, you didn't found anything. The old 2.2 are using the Pf52. I know my 91 2.2 does.

Well at least I learned something. I've been using the PF-47 since I had my car. Maybe I'll switch to the PF-52 if its bigger. Are there any negative effects of doing this?

no its actually quite a good thing, you now have about an extra .25-.5L of oil in the system, bigger filter generally means better filtration...

I know I didn't FIND anything any more than Columbus FOUND North America. It was here the whole time - but I had looked on here and my search didn't kick anything out. It was my first oil change on the car - and it's a deviation from the stock recommendation that a lot of people never think to deviate from.

Here's a pic of the 5.7L truck filter installed.

Ideally you should have the intake tube on the outside of the filter. No you will have a "lip" on the inside that could be onbstructing air flow.

The PF59 will not work for you. That one will work for the 2.4 J's. I'm running that one as well. I will give you props on using your head and doing some looking.

Well if you want more oil, get an oil filter relocation kir and the moroso oil accumulator.

Why? YOu can put extra oil in it. Truely with the bigger filter you are not getting extra oil. If you put oil in your filter prior to install as I do, then add you new oil to your motor until it is full, then start it and let it run for a few minutes to get the oil in the motor, you will not be any fuller than using the stock filter. The bigger filter will give better filtartion, which is a plus. I do over fill my car a little on oil (not a whole lot).

I'm aware of that - but it's still a huge improvement and the obstruction should be negligible.

I wouldn't recommend over filling the oil pan, the crank shaft would aereate the oil, causing a loss of oil pressure(air compresses, oil doesn't)and crankshaft windage, which causes a loss of horsepower. The larger filter does add extra oil to the system because of the extra filter capacity, even though it's only going to be a few ounces. The larger filter does add extra filter media surface area, but will only filter the same size particles. It will help prevent horsepower losses by having less restriction, once again because of the extra capacity. Depending on the restriction of the stock size filter and the larger filter, that could result in a couple of horsepower, no longer being lost to pumping inefficiency.
