w41 swap in 95 gt
Monday, March 21, 2005 7:30 AM
Hey guys and gals,

i have ordered the engine and transmission and computer from the us of a 1993 achieva and I have done a few searches but never got direct answers to my questions so I have a few questions that i was hoping could be answered.

Do i need to change the wiring harness from the 95 to the 93 to use the computer or does it plug in ? ...

Is the transmission also a direct swap or do the axles have to be changed to the 93 style.

And is there anything else i need to know before starting the swap ?

thanks guys

Jeremy

you need the chip to do the conversion (www.mantapart.com) and yes it is a direct swap, I just did one. you can even take the stuff off your current engine and put it on the new engine to make pluging in a little easier (plugs may be a little different from 93 to 95). you may not like the way it drives though, the W41 was a racing motor and as such is a little much for the street, the HO is a better motor for anything you plan to drive in town and such (the W41 cams are a little rough on idle). still a good pickup though, should be a killer car to drive.

you'll need off your motor:
Alternator
motor mounts (all 4)
and just to be safe:
throttle body
sensors (all of them due to the obd? we have)

first of all..congrats on the w41 and good choice on the year and tranny...
second..you wont need the ecu,i wouldnt even try to install it..im assuming your using a manuel tranny , all youll need is the w41 chip from mantapart, and i suggest ordering it as soon as posible cus they dont ship to fast ...but it will raise your redline to 7500 and turn off your speed govenor( and a few spark/fuel changes)but why wire up a new ecu when you can just slap a chip in
next the tranny...it should mount to the car fine, only thing YOU need to worry about is the mounts...youll need to use the upper tranny mount that is on your isuzu and use the front mount that should come with the tranny...oh,and might want to slap some of karos tranny mounts on there while you have it out, but be warned, those inserts will not fit the front getrag mount, only the isuzu one....after that youll need to make a smalllll extention for one of your shifter cables..its nothing complicated,i can draw it out for you if you like :p.......hope i helped some and let me know how the swap goes , im sure youll love the new power

The axle from the Isuzu tranny don't fit the old Getrag IF I'm right.

As for the Ecm, my 92 Scx ecm was a direct swap in my 90 Gtz.

Since you went with a 93, you only have 185hp, not 190. You can look on ebay for an underdrive pulley.

You should not need any of the 95 sensor since both are OBDI.

didnt changeforabutton keep his stock axles when he swaped his trans ?

cause from what i remember he did , i dont have the motor out of the wrecked 92 scx yet so it would be hard for me to check it with the 5spd cav axle ive got

The stock axles will work with the older getrag no problems there. You do have to shim the rear isuzu mount on 2 of the bolt holes. I just used a few washers to take up the gap.

All the sensors should be the same between the motors, but there is one plug that you might not plug back in. Its a heater of some sort for the emissions hoses by the black box on the intake. Not sure if 93 had them yet or not, no biggy if it doesn't get plugged back in. Just as the other said, get a chip from manta for a 95 jbody. You can run on a stock computer just fine till you get one ( I did for about 4 months).

Take a look and see what cylinder head casting (last 3 numbers) your motor comes with. It could be a 753 or 303, in which case you can use your stock exhaust manifold and down pipe. If its a 955 or 086, you should really switch to the HO style exhaust manifold and have a down pipe made. The HO mani and downpipe swap would be worth it even on a 753 head, specialy since the motor is out of the car anyways.

Do you have the older style power steering pump, brackets, and a cam pulley yet? You will need to swap that stuff over in order to have power steering. It bolts right to the motor, and you only need to bend the existing pressure line a little to make it reach properly.

Those things should clear up most of the remaining issues. Pics always help out, so here are some from the trans swap.

Trans pics

They show it mounted and stuff, and where you have to shim the rear mount. Also has a shot of the cable extension. Im going to get a better picture of that with dimentions soon also.

Couldn't he just take the chip out of the donor car's ecu? I used to have a bunch of 660 chips laying around that I would swap out on occasion on my '90 Z24 to see which one worked best. It seems that the one I got from a 93 Corsica gave the best results, although the cruise control didn't work with that chip in. What I'm saying is, he's swapping a Quad 4 for a Quad 4, the ECU's should be the same, just a different chip.

Using a chip from another computer will not work with the Quad 4. It will work but it will throw a code. Each chip goes in it's computer.

you WON'T be able to run the car without the chip. Since it's a W41, it won't work with the 95 chip unlesss you're some kind of super guy. The W41 cams don't work with the Ho chip so don't even think about it with the 95 chip. The 95 chip can work with Ho cams but not with the W41 cams.

from what i understand the manta chip is an upgrade over both

I did use the older sensors on mine (oops), BUT the oil level indicator is a different plug. the 95 plug fits in the older sensor, but unplugging it may get tricky. Any j-yard that has the older quad cars may have this plug. sorry, when I replied to the last few threads I had been going on about 4 hours sleep for the whole weekend (working on MY HO install). I'm MUCH better now (LOL)

simple solution...load the car up with tools, drive it over the border, pick up the motor and install it right there, drive it back over the border with a BIIIIGGG smile.
