I saw
this 180 Degree Thermostat on TurboTech Racing's website. Has anyone done this? I hate how my car thermostat will heat up when I'm idling (my old Jeep and Honda stayed at a constant temperature). It's nice and cheap at $15. Is it worth it? Is the instal hard?
dammit i want one for the eco
195 is stock in ALL J's and put a 180 in there and drive it around in the winter time you think that a 15 degree difference wotn make much but it will take about 10 more minutes to get the car warm enough to drive... i did that in my old 2.2 and i switched it out a little later....
and like said above the ecu will stay in closed loop mode and your car wont run right...
I have heard it is not a good idea not to use a 180 degree termostat.

I have a 96 Z24 and in the owners manual it says the 2.4's have 180 stock and the 2.2's have 195 and I know for a fact that they are 180 so importfightercavys wrong about all cavys coming with 195 but your car did come with a 195 cause its a 2.2, not sure if they changed in later dates though and a thermostat change for a 2.2 is easy but a 2.4 much harder cause the waterpump is in the back and thats where the thermo is upside down
^
The thermostat is suppose to be on the side of the head like the 2.3 isn it?
As for the car not running right, it's BS! I've been running without a thermostat for 2 years and everything is fine.

I've got a 180, no problems here. can't say for sure if it made any difference inpower though, put in as part of the rebuild. No problems warming up though, atleast in 40 degree weather. I've put them in most of my prior vehicles, they seemed to make a little more power, but that was on the subjective butt dyno!
mine is a 180 stock but runs at 195 i just put one of those bottles of i used hyper lube radiator cooler(there are a few comps that make them tho) and now my car runs at 180 and doesn't go much above 195 on a hot day in trafic.
the view is all the same unless your the lead dog.
From my experience, every cavalier I've come accross has a 180. However. That doesn't mean they all came with 180's. And I'm sure some mechanic somewhere decided 180 was too cold and told some poor parts guy, "Give me a 195." Thinking he was doing someone a favor.
As far as buying a thermostat for a cavalier from somewhere other then the dealer, I'd never do it. I went through four on my girlfriends car in less then a month cause the car never heated up on the highway. I went through a regular murray, 2 ultrastats, and a failsafe all by murray. Didn't fix the problem till I went to the dealer and spent the fifteen there and got one.
and unless you have an alluminum block, and an alluminum head, 195 is NOT hot. that is why your fan doesn't kick on until about 210 or so. They are made to run when they are warm, not cold.
I would never use an additive in my cooling system. If there is a real problem Fix it. otherwise, understand why your car does what it does before you change it.
^^ well my 2.2 ecotec stays at 195 and its all alluminum block...
I have a 2001 2.2 i was looking around for a thermostat and the guy at the parts store told me that it was crazy because my car came stock with a 180 degree.
the stock one is 180 degrees. believe me, i took it out, and stamped right on the back is "180"
go to an auto parts store and ask for a replacement thermostat, it'll be 180.
the only way to get your car to run cooler is to drill a small hole in the center of the stat, so that there's a small amount of coolant constantly running through the radiator. nobody makes colder than 180 for J's.
i meant a 195 degree thermostat. What is the thermostat that is in your eco? Bet it is prolly a 180.
i bet its not
my car never runs below 195 once its warmed up
