Test Pipe at the track
Monday, March 07, 2005 5:30 PM
I did a quick registry search and came up with 22 htis for test pipe, but figure alot more people are pulling there cat out. Who runs without a Cat at the track? Does it provide any noticable gains on a N/A car. I have an eco and most intrested in what the eco guys are getting for performance with out the cat. I am ready to do exaust on my car and am wondering if it is worth while to have the shop make me a test pipe that I can swap in and out.

most cars usually will loose power with out the cat

only advantge to ditching the cat is for nitrous , or turbo

unless you are boosted over 10 psi a test pipe really isn't a gain.

I ask because a co-worker removed the cat on his Grand Am and it would chirp 2nd in an auto after he removed the cat. I believe it was Quad 4.

no way removing a cat gives that much power. keep it in there.

taking off those heavy wheels would provide more of a gain...

Just get a High Flow cat, they are like $88 shipped from Gravana right now. An AutoTrans Interceptor can help chirp'em, but not just removing the cat.

Only can say I rode in it with a cat then without the cat. It chirped second.

i dont have a cat and on the but dyno it seemed to pick up more power at higher rpm's
and at idle the tone got alot softer and quieter

What you can't say is what would have happened if the old cat had been replaced with a new one. I suspect the old cat was plugged, and replacement would have accomplished the same thing.

I love when people say a large blockage in your exhaust increases your engine's power.

Removing a catalytic converter from your exhaust WILL increase power...I don't care what anyone says about it.

N/A you will see little gain, but power will INCREASE.

however, it's highly illegal in most states and if you get caught you're in big ass trouble... we're talkin $1000 min fine, 30 days jail time and impound of vehicle

on a nitrous/boosted car however, you will see a substantial gain in power all throughout the power band.

it is possible, look at an rsx-s with a reg header, then look at one with a race header, like 10 more hp just from removing the cat.

removing a cat might gain you a few top end horses, but you lose a LOT of bottom end torque.

New cats are not very restrictive. Little to gain and lots to lose.

i think that applies for all 50 states. but i believe the wording of the laws says if youre driving a pollution controlled vehicle on any public road w/o a converter your in trouble. a lot of vehicle laws get tossed out the window while youre at the drag strip

Was replaced with an OEM replacement cat, when he needed to get an inspection sticker, no longer got second gear.

The cat being removed is not gonna be that noticable. FIrst of all the cat maybe provides about 3.5-5 psi of back pressure the only gain your gonna see is at high rpm and you'll notice a loss of torque you'd be better of spending your money on a high flow cat from gravana or magnaflow and get some headers unless your gonna turbo the cavy in which case the better the air flow the better the turbo will perform.
