hello ppl....i just got my head off the other night
i wiggled my valves around and they move pretty bad in the guide...(or at least it seems like the amount they move is bad)
now in the haynes manual it says the valves SHOULD have some variance there...
my head has 85,000 miles on it....
should i spring and get the new guides or not worry about it?
ive heard just putting NEW guides in a set of 350 SB chevy stock heads if their warn out gives 7hp...so is it the same here?

So do they just press into the head?
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
yup, sure do. no idea on tolerances nor exactly how far they need to be pressed in. i left that up to the machine shop. i called around and asked places about doing them, a lot said they didnt have the equipment nor wanted to. so im glad i did find one that could do it, they said they had been doing them for years.
Don't know what ya got til they take it away...
It probably only takes a bench press and some IPA

and what is the point of bronze guides over stock? able to handle more abuse? reduced friction creating more power?
well considering the fact mine made the valves wobble, id say i needed at least stock replacements LOL
but yes, the idea is less prone to valve sticking and better heat transfer.

^^
so your bronze guides made the valves wobble?
no... my STOCK ones did after use. hence why i replaced them.

but what about wear on the guides compared to stock ones, or stainless steel ones? longevity is something to be desired from some of us...i can never get a decent answer on this ? no matter who i ask...maybe someone here knows
Way dead thread but did your valve guides come cut for the seals or did the machine shop cut them when you brought it to them?
sivalves.com sells them two ways... they even have two separate part numbers for them, too.
ive been told by a few machinists the groove inst a necessity but if ur anal its a good peace of mind thing to have.
ive gotten the cut ones and the non-cut ones. just need to specify which you'd like. personally, ill always run the cut version.

Thank for the info.
I got the ones without the groove, I'll probably just run them they way they are as the seal is contained in the spring. so even if it where to start to move it wouldn't be flying around inside the head.
