I bet it's coming from the passenger side. Without hearing it I'll bet it's the timing chain making noise. The 2.2 OHVs are terrible about that. Get it replaced. It's cheap insurance.

thats what i was thinking

Last time I had a noise on an LN2 that I thought was a lifter it turned out to be a timing chain. It sounded like it was coming from the lifter right next to the power steering. Turns out I caught it in time. The tensioner was toast and the chain could have failed at any time. That would have resulted in broken/bent valves and more than likely piston damage.

The timing chain and tensioner are fairly cheap parts. The labor is minimal (2.5 hours). I think gm recommends to replace them @ 75,000 miles anyways.

yea, im at about the 75000 mile range, it sounds just like a lifter on the passenger side, about how much is the parts? would i be able to do it myself or does it involve taking the engine out?

First off, how mechanically inclined are you? If you have more than basic knowledge (ie. chagine a tire, oil change) I would suggest you do it yourself. You won't need any special tools that I can remember. It will take a little while if it's your first time though.

Here is a how-to on the replacement.

Parts are listed there and can be had @ autozone for less that $175.

Tip: I did this without draining the oil.

my last job, i worked rebuilding diesel engines, from my size engine to big ass mofo's, the timing is pretty much the same, remove timing cover, blah blah, reset gears on the "0" marks, put it back together, but id like to do it myself, i just dont wanna have to have gear tools, and all those other stupid tools, but does it come as a rebuild kit? or do i have to get everything seperate?

I can almost gaurentee that that is the problem. I had one go out on a friend and I had to do one in my sunfire. If thet doesn't work then what kinda oil are you using? I work at a dealership and I see cars of all kinds come in and 9-10 times going with 10w 30 oil over the recommended 5w 30 can remove any minor ticking.

i use mobile 1 fully senthetic 10w-30, but thats whats recommended in my manual, think i should start using the 5w-30? but this isnt minor ticking, like cavvette said, it ticks when the oil is heated up, it doesnt do it until i go driving somewhere, i am pretty definite that its the timing chain, that piece of crap, this is one reason besides its slowness why i hate this engine, i need an rx7, ha

yeah then more then likley the one of the crappy plastic guides broke. so your chain has slack causing it to hit

ok, question, what if i cant get to it just now, and im about to take a trip home, which is 6 hours away, you think my car will be fine for the trip there and back?
Re: tappin in the engine

There is a good chance (if it is for sure the timing chain) that you will be able to make it there and back.
hell it could make it another 3k miles. On the other hand with the guides bein worn (more than likely) your car is a ticking time bomb though. The chain goes and you might as well look for another engine. I wouldn't risk it. If anything go there, fix it, an then drive back.

damn, mobile 1 sucks that bad? haha, id rather switch to royal purple, but to tell you the truth, im not gonna waste that stuff on a cavalier, ill just wait until i get an FD, but castrol fully synthetic is better, huh? 10w 30 or 5w 30
