Relocating to Dallas, I have a few questions..........
Monday, November 27, 2006 6:51 AM

I just got a job offer in the Dallas Independent School District. Can anyone help me out with the background info about the school district and how far will 44k go in Dallas? I'll probably be renting a 1bedroom or studio apt.

Right now I'm living in Queens,NY with family.

p.s I have read about the scandals of the DISD, but I'm more concerned about how they treat their employees and job stability.

I can't offer much on the rep and benefits of the DISd. I can however tell you that if you are willing to live in a suburb or surrounding city that 44K will get you a long way. Should be able to afford even a 4 bedroom house on that kind of income.

What exactly do you need to know with DISD? The company that I work for sends out employees to work for the DISD, and we do a criminal background. Though, only a partial of DISD are our employees. Are you just wanting to know how @!#$ty the DISD is? .. but Baylor would probably be more helpful than I.

haha......... thanks for the tip.

I'm just interested in how well I can live. Trust me, I don't expect Dallas to be perfect but it has to be better than NYC. 44k in NYC and your still struggling to get by. The rents here are pretty outrageous. The only thing I like about it is its mass transit system, it takes you every where. Here in new york teachers make 46k starting next year, but they get steady raises.

Definitely dish out any dirt on how they treat there employees. My ears are open.........

Y'all are all more illegal then i'm hispanic and still don't speak any spanish so both y'all shut up lol, 44k will get around nicely theirs alot of single bed rooms with 750sq ft and such starting around 650-750 depending on how much your wanting to pay or how far you want to live the suburbs like mesquite, garland, richardson, plano area have really nice apartments and homes at a good price. 44k will get you off pretty well. and from what i know of their still raising teachers pay scale but thats a jon question .

I know nothing about DISD. What I make as a Wylie employee gets me from paycheck to paycheck, but then again I live by myself and have to pay 650/mo rent, utilities, 315/mo on my car and a lot for insurance. I'm in a 1 bedroom apartment that was under construction when I first leased it 3 1/2 years ago.

there's a huge difference going from 44k in the NYC to 44k in this area! as already stated, you'll have no issues as far as quality of life goes. you'll likely have to adjust a LOT to the lower cost of living, if anything.

graduation percentages are lower in DISD than in many of the other districts around this metro area, as are pay rates, frankly. classes are often overcrowded, which should be no big issue coming from NYC. treatment will vary a great deal on the school at which you plan to teach.
do you know which school you'll be going to, by chance? i'm not a teacher, but i can try to dig up some general info if you like. if you happen to have a choice, try to get in at one of the magnet schools, as they tend to attract the brightest students from the district.

back in the day, i ended up at a private school, as my parents were very underwhelmed by the nearby DISD elementary school and feeder system. my mom was a teacher in this general area for a couple of decades, so i've got a passable grasp on some of the basics.

What grade are you going to teach? And what school have you been offered (if any?)? My mom has been teaching with the DISD for 25+ years....
