Need an engine
Sunday, March 05, 2006 4:04 PM
I let someone drive my car not to long ago and i need to replace an engine and everytime i find an engine for my car ( 99 Z24) it gets sold before i can get enough money to buy it.

I have around 900 dollars saved up and if anyone knows where any 2.4's are that are for sale around the DFW area and have relatively low miles on it (preferably under 50k) please let me know

Thanks

What broke in the engine? Why not just have it rebuilt? Did it spin a rod bearing? Or is it just knocking?

with 900 i would have it built with performance parts. Wouldnt take to much more than that.

it makes a clanking noise whenever its running that speeds up whenever the engine revs up. if anyone lives around irving send me a message because i want to know exactly whats wrong with it.
thanks

If it is making a knocking sound, u probably spun the #3 rod bearings. Was the engine low on oil?
Call 972-294-USED. They have a 99 2.4 engine for $750. They are in Frisco.

oh and if i spun the #3 bearing is the engine fixable or not?

If you are going to try to repair the engine with a spun rod bearing, you might as well do a rebuild on the bottem end of the engine.

I know but could it have damaged the block because the noise is really loud like if i start it up my neighbor that lives 5 houses down can hear it in her house. and how much would it cost to fix it to where it would run properly or possibly better?
Re: Need an engine

The cost will depend on how much damage was done to the block. You might have only spun a bearing or two. If so, the engine would need to be pulled out and taken to a machine shop. I am guessing that the machine shop would charge you around $300-500 to rebuild the bottem end and assemble the entire engine witth all of the gaskets and new parts.

do you know of any shops that would do it for that price around irving? i live in south irving and i really need my car back. can you tell whats wrong with it without taking the engine apart?

I do not know of any machine shops in Irving. I had my 2.2 built at a machine shop in Arlington called HnH Machine. My bill was $694, but my engine had alot of other stuff done for racing. They have also built two other 2.4s for turbo.

From what you are describing, it sounds like the engine either spun a rod bearing or threw a connecting rod. The 2.4s are notorious for spinning the #3 rod bearing when ran low on oil.

Yep probably spun more then 1 rod bearing with low oil! Hell I spun 3 and my oil was FULL! If your lucky you can have the shorblock rebuilt it. But I wouldn't start it or drive it anymore will just make it worse.

i havnt started it in forever but im wondering if there has already been to much damage done to the block to fix it the sound is really loud. Also i need someone that has enough knowledge that can put it in for anywhere from 200-400 dollars if thats reasonable.

I think im going to go to the machine shop in arlington to see how much it would cost to rebiuld the bottom end and if its reparable. Does anyone know how i can tell if it is reparable.

Also should i put motor mounts in? or just an upper or a lower because i really dont want the car to vibrate to pieces i just want the engine to be a little stiffer. Which mount would be better for this.

It will have to be removed and taken apart before they can tell you if it is rebuildable or not. Solid motor mounts are only worth the trouble if you are breaking stock ones IMO. They make the car rattle under 1200RPM.
