Messin' With Texas is Fun!
Apparently I pissed off an entire state, one of the biggest states at that--Texas. Because I wrote in the September issue of Super Street that the Alamo sucked, and now all the Texans have their panties all ruffled up.
As a writer, I enjoy this kind of passion from readers because, for one, I know they're reading my @!#$. But I couldn't have possibly fathomed that a mere 31 words (to be exact) can incite so much anger.
I do respect the passion these people have for their state. Like them, I'd die for my city (Long Beach) but I wouldn't get all gooey and pissy about what someone wrote about it, especially when it's a small automotive magazine with 250,000 readers a month. For one, I'm not that insecure if they someone said Long Beach sucks. It's really not that big of a deal. But I guess there's nothing better to do in Texas than defend a small missionary in the middle of Boring-Town, USA. But I am passionate about civil rights and history, and the way these guys are going about defending the Alamo is ridiculous (I'll clarify in the next few paragraphs).
First, there are actually far worse things I've written about in Super Street, but none to the magnitude of creating such a fuss in forums, MySpace, and e-mails. I said the Alamo sucked because it was boring, underwhelming, and, well, it's just an ugly building. So that's why I wrote the small sidebar in the article. It was what it was: I mean, the Alamo isn't something I'd visit and drool over. So don't expound on it like I killed your moms and great great grandfathers--that's just plain ignorant.
So let's clear the history first. The Alamo has two sides to it: the frontiersmen who defended it and the Mexican gov't who policed it. One of the reasons why the Alamo occurred was because the frontiersmen in and around Texas were agriculturists who needed slaves to keep up their land, while the Mexican gov't were abolitionists who wanted slavery to stop. In fact, Mexico was anti-slavery way before America was. When the two sides collided about this idea of slavery, the Alamo happened.
I side with Mexico for obvious reasons. But the media this century as well as Hollywood glorified the scene as if it was a group of Mongrels (Mexico) trying to take land from Texans. If you don't know this, then don't talk to me. This is history and it's laid out as a fact. Whatever your elementary school teachers taught you was wrong. I mean, the history books only allocate a couple of pages to slavery and the plight of other minorities like the Chinese and Filipinos.
So that's why I say the Alamo sucked because it was a bunch of Texans fighting to keep slavery intact. I wouldn't be proud of that, but I also won't hate people for being proud of it, and go on forums talking smack (seriously, there are far better things to do). And for @!#$s and giggles, I also said San Antonio sucked in the sidebar because frankly that's my opinion.
So if you want to boycott the Tour, write to your congressmen, or e-mail Bill O'Reilly, please do so. Because I respect protests like that...I'm always down for a protest.
Just don't hate because our opinions differ and what we learned in school was different.
But please know that I couldn't care less about what happens because I don't give a damn about anything, including forums and hate mail. I get that @!#$ every day. I'm just glad that my words are read in Super Street and that it causes such a stir (writers love that @!#$, believe me).
So don't expect an apology for what I wrote. Take it for what it is (a joke) and move on. Don't threaten to kill me and kick my ass next time I'm in Texas--that's beyond ignorance. Say your @!#$ on the forums and move on.

I might buy the occasional mag once in a while but i normally skip it entirely. I say we BOYCOTT super street to hell with them. Oh and next time we see him in texas lets all give him a nice fashioned TEXAS ass wooping.

Ive never been to the Alamo and dont care to go. I was on the Army base in SA a couple years ago and was told that the actual location the real Alamo is in the base. And that the one everyone sees is a rebuilt version for people to see. But I dont know how much of that is true.
But I do love this Country called Texas that I live in. I express my love for this place everyday in some form or fassion. I love the new George Straight song about Texas.
I dont know of any other states people that are as proud as Texans are and im happy to be a part of it.
