well guys, i have a friend who has a 97 Z24 with 96000 miles on it. the body is nice and everything but the engine is kinda noisy. I told him I would buy it from him. Now the thing is if I buy it from him I would like to rebuild the engine. Don't get me wrong, I know there are many Js out there with many more miles on them than this and still run perfectly, its just that I want it to run at its best and since I don't have anything to do after work I was thinking this would keep me a little busy

. (yeah I know I need a girlfriend). But N e ways, Do you know of any company that sell complete engine gasket kits for a 97 z24? any recomendations on internals (e.g. high compression, coated, forged) since the engine is going to be all open I think I should take advantage of that, right? Let me know of any set up that you guys recomend. I have a $4000 budget for this engine. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

That's a good Budget with no labor cost.
The labor is more expensive than anything else.
Water-pump, 40 dollars.
Water-pump installed at the dealer 800.00 dollars.
see what I mean?
anyway,
I'm on the same boat. 97 Red Z24, The body is nice, but it needs a new head-gasket and possible a new cylinder-head. I haven't done any homework about my car

I need to figure out how much all this is going to cost me. and probably a lot because I don't have time to work on this, and I rather let somebody else deal with it and do it right. I don't know if I can handle a week off work and under the hood to make the car worst than it is
I know what you mean about the labor thing!!!! Well I have read a lot about cavaliers, I own one so... but performance wise I'll rather get help from the pros cause I don't want to F everything up and then regret it. Any way lets see what responses we get. If we get any. lol!!!!!

2.2s are way easier. that's a sunday drive to church.
2.4s are more complecated.
We need to start with a list with prices. Things to replace, and things that can also be upgrade for the 2.4L.
Things to replace:
Head-Gasket, how much for a regular standar head-gasket? and how much for an upgraded head-gasket that can last longer?
if they make 'em? probably not
also the thickness of the gasket too. someone was running a gp on the gaskets a while ago and i think they were around 70 bucks
Are they thicker than what GM installs from the factory?
I think thicker and harder might be better. something that can handle more heat and more pressure for a longer period of time.
I can't wait to find out where did my gasket go wrong, it might be between
cylinder 2 and 3 (just guessing)

I hope the cylinder head is still good!!
I also want to compare the thickness between what it was on the car and the new head-gasket that I want to install.
List:
High performance Head-Gasket..........$70.00
Performance Head-Bolts.......................$???
the head gasket that was on a gp was the cometic one. it runs about 85$ if i remember right.
so here is a list that i can think of...
High performance Head-Gasket .......................$88.95 www.jtuners.com
ARP Head Stud Kit ............................................ $150 www.carcustoms.net
ARP Main Stud Kit ..............................................$85 www.carcustoms.net
Eagle Forged H-Beam Connecting Rods........$310 www.turbotechracing.com
Wiesco Forged Pistons (i went with 10.5)........$475 www.carcustoms.net
Timing chain set...................................................$200 Karo got me one, not sure on price yet
clevitte main and rod bearing............................ shop around you should find them. i got mine for 150$CAN (rod & main)
a full gasket set runs about 170 i think, but then again, i dont know where to get that!!! here GM is wanting 500+ for that!!!!!! WTF.
for the remaining, its up to you, if you want bigger cams, new lifters, bigger valves,p&p head , 2.3 oil pump swap, etc....
Wow, 500.00 CAN for a head-gasket kit?
how much is that in U.S Dollars?
