Motor will not heat up.

96 pontiac sunfire 2.2l 5 speed with 190+k miles on it.

My motor will not warm up. It will warm up if it just sets, but when I drive it, it goes to cold after a little bit. I noticed that if I stay under 2500 rpms it will heat up, and the heater will work, so the gauge is working becasue when the motor is cold, no heat. Im thinking its a thermostat problem. Maybe its stuck open, or its became weak and any pressure over 2500 rpms pushes it open. I know this is hurting my gas mileage and probably not good for my motor. Where is the thermostat located at? Do you thin this is the problem?

also, my belt is squeeking. I took it off not to long ago and it looked fine, the belt is new also, only been on the car for about 3 months. I heard it could be the alternator, but I was thinking it could also be the water pump. What do you guys think? could the squeek be affeting my temps also?

I'd say the thermostat is stuck open. $10 part. replace it.

Okay first thing get a thermostat and gasket replace it. Make sure the coolant is also in good shape, if isnt flush it out.

Thats if that was your problem which sounds possible and the first thing I'd done already.

As for the belt dont just go tossing parts it at. The belt is god you say. Where did you by it from? I was really stuipd one time in life and brought a Pep Boys belt and it squealed a few months later, so brought a Ford one and it worked fine till the car got sold.

Could be a tensioner, could be ny of the pulleys that drive the componets on the belt as well.

ok i no this is an old post but i looked back to see if other people had this problem i unfortunitly have it to. the car will stay at running temp until im going over 55 mph or on the highway then it just goes down and the heat isnt as hot as before i replaced thermostate with a 180 degree one and flushed colant and bled the lines... im just wondering if anyone noes where to go next????

thanks cale!

Cale just depends on what the temps are when ur doing that speed.I would think if its really cold the cold air tends to reduce the heat temps at high way speeds if its really cold but, thermostat can stick a little or start to go bad even after a short time.U can try to do a thermostat and if no change could be the heater core has problems. My old 85 does the same thing if its really COLD but ,other than that u can put some card board to partially cover the radiator a small piece which will resolve the issue and cause no harm during the fall/winter season.Try my idea if u do not want to go and do a new thermo u will see and feel the difference.By the way my heater core has been replaced due to leaking but, heat is great in town just highway drvg is when its cooler.
