i have a 2.2 ohv. its smoking alot and I think its the valve guides.
So can anyone explain to me how to replace them?
thanks
Smoking how? And why do you think its the valve guides?
smoking like, a little at idle, and smoke machine if i touch the throttle.
im pretty sure its the valve guides because the bottom end is fine (new gapless rings and good compression test). and valve guides are the only other thing i can think of.
and when i pulled the plugs they were completely coated in oil.
Another thing to check instead of the guides is the valve seals. My buddy's K car did that, and it turned out to be the seals. They're the barrier between the oil in the top of the head and the intake ports.

so the valve seals can be replaced from the top? without removing the head?
Typically, yes. You'll need some compressed air piped into the cylinder via the spark plug hole - this is to hold the valve up while the keeper and spring are removed. Otherwise, the valve will drop into the cylinder. This is how it's done on pushrod motors, if I remember correctly.....I imagine a similar technique is employed for OHC motors.....HTH..
You should do some other tests first.. So you don't waste time or money. Like the check the pcv valve and your air cleaner.. could be full of oil. Get up to speed and engine brake, or downshift and see if it smokes then, that would be rings. Valve guides does sound right, but just make sure! Another givaway for valve guides is let it get nice and hot and idle for a bit then a sharp wot burst. If that gives a bunch of smoke which it looks like it does, then replace them. Goodluck with it. -Phil
Speed costs... How fast ya wanna go??
