Signs of a Bad Power Steering Pump
Saturday, November 26, 2005 8:15 AM
I've noticed since the weather has gotten cold outside, when i start my car up (cold) and turn the steering u hear a whistling sound? Also the wheel is harder to turn. The problem seems to go away when the car reaches normal operating temp. Could this indicate the power steering pump is going? If so I want to get it fixed before my warranty is up.

Thanks

There is a TSB on 03 for momently loss of power assist, in temps below 10F the p/s may experience a moment of power assist. Then in a minute or two all is fine.

If i change the fluid how do i go about draining the stuff already in there? What are some good "Quality" brands to replace it with?

im not sure on ur model but i would take off cap.. undo th return hose (thinner one) let drain from th res. turn the car on and turn the wheel back and fourth alot of fluid will come out of the hose it can get kind of messy or leave th hose on and keep sucking it out with a turkey baster or something do it a couple times theres not actually a drain plug so u have to do it a couple times and u probably wont get 100% out but it will be good enough just get as much as u can add some lucas power steering conditioner ect.. then valvoline synthetic steering fluid to fill the res. up should work good

Whistling could also mean there is air in the PS lines...

yup. removing the cap, and turning the wheel back and forth a few times does the trick.
