Getrag Drain Plug

OK guys... I know this has been asked before, and I DID search... problem is the post I found with the answer had broken pics...

Anyway, I have an 05 5-speed Sunfire. I want to change the tranny fluid to B&M Trick Shift ATF, problem is I am unsure where the stupid drain plug is... I know I need a hex head socket, so before I go removing random bolts, I what to make sure... is the bolt below the bar code in this picture the drain plug?

Thanks guys

that looks like the fill hole, i think the drain is on the side.

Fill hole?

Anyway I found something in archives that answered my question... it is on the side right by the sub frame...

And I filled from the top... there was a black plug with a gear with waves going through it... I just used a funnel that had a long ass straw

fill hole. i believe you have to use a pump to fill the trans with fluid.

OK, so what did I dump all that trick shift into if that black cap with the picture of the gear sitting in waves was not a fill hole?

I've already put 20 miles on the car with not problems, and not a thing has leaked?

hell i don't know...eco's are different than my 2.4

didn't mean to hit enter yet.

i don't even have a dipstick to check my tranny level on mine. from my understanding, the 2.4's have to be pumped with fluid until it comes out of a "weap hole."

The ones ive checked use that hole in the pic for the check/fill the other with the gear and wavy lines. The isuzu has a dipstick on top and a drain plug on the side of the case, a mess to fill without a pump..

Correct. All getrags (regardless of motor) you drain with the one on the bottem side, facing the drivers wheel. The one in the picture you take out (allen key) with the car level put the fluid in the top (cap with the wavey lines) until it starts coming out this hole in the picture. Then it is full.

sounds like a lot, but i could be wrong, my Isuzu only uses 2qts. Never changed tranny fluid in a Getrag though, just checked the levels at work.

Drain hole is located on the very bottom of tranny case facing the driver's wheel. You will need a hex to remove it.
To fill, you will fill on the plug next to the red vent cap on the top of tranny case. Tip both drain and fill plug will look the same.

DO NOT USE 5 QRTS that is just to much money wasted and it could actually raise the temp of your fluid. DO NOT PASS 3 QRTS. GM calls 1.8-2.0 qrts depending on years, save your self the hassle and just put in the remainder 0.2 qrts in if it calls for 1.8 qrts.
Now the Saturn fluid TSB calls for 2.7 qrts for the getrag tranny noise. I put in all 3 bottles since the remainder 0.3qrts was so miniscule. Best result came from the B&M Synthetic Trick Shift.

Hope that helps out.

Your car is not a getrag (unless you swapped the tranny out).
If you put 5 quarts in the getrag you need to drain some out. 2 Quarts is all you need.

Yeah, I found the drain hole... and I put 4 qrts of B&M Synthetic Trick Shift... since I'm going to the track tomorrow, I was going to check the bolts on the ball joint of my pacesetter header, so I'll drain out a qrt then...

However the shifts are ALOT smooth... and that damn rattle is still there... just a tad quiter...

The B&M fluid is kind of a trade off. The noise will still be there (but a bit quieter) but you'll be able to shift again!

I have no rattle at all with the B&M. Again my car only had the rattle once. At 800 miles. Took it ot the dealer they put the saturn lude in it, and it went away. Has not came back since I switched to B&M fluid.

Hey,

So what you are saying is don't fill through the little red cap because it will take a long time!! And so the plug directly behind it is where you fill the tranny?

I am not sure how to post pics directly with thext, so heres the link to my webshots account. Fell free to have a look. I took a pic of the red vent cap, and fill plug directly behiond it!!

Thanks,

Will
