VSS Caked with Metal Chunks

I made a post a few days ago about my speedometer not working on my '99 Cavalier Z24 5 speed. Someone suggested to check the VSS. I got it out of the tranny, and the entire thing with completely caked with metal shavings. What would that be from? Could it be the clutch seeing that it is still the original with 98,000 miles? Could someone help me on this one? Thanks.

BTW, I cleaned it off, put it back in, and the speedometer is back to normal!

No. Unfortuneately it means every one of those tiny pieces of metel are from the trannys gears. Not a good thing. Change your fluid at least and hopefully you'll drain all the metal fragments out and hopefully it'll be ok.

Good Luck

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
