Does anyone know what controls the speedometer and the odometer? It started a few weeks ago when my odometer would get all garbled and not show the the miles on it. Sometimes it would show the miles, and a few minutes later it was garbled again. That problem never got any worse. The other problem is that the speedometer needle would jump around once in a while. Just today, the speedometer neddle jumps all over the place constantly. I was driving home on the freeway doing about 75 (I think) and the needle kep jumping from 75 to 0 and back constantly all the way home. It never stopped. It seems to do it even worse at slower speeds. It is REALLY annoying! The only thing that comes to mind is the splash guard on the passenger side that covers the wheel well where the computer is was damaged in an accident. I didn't get it replaced yet, and we had some pretty good rain storms I had to drive it. Could it possible be that the computer got wet and ruined? Not sure if that has anything to do with what controls the speedo and odo though. Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks!

thats a tough one. Could be the dash itself. But the speedometer is controled by the
Vehicle speed sensor located in the transmission. Its usualy bolted to the case near where the shifter linkage hooks up.

Hmm..Would the computer on the passenger side under the bumper have anyhting to do with it? And does the speed sensor also control the odometer? I'm guessing since both are affected (but not at the same time) that one thing may be causing both problems. One last thing, what keeps track of the vehicle's miles? The computer or is there a separate module? And if that unit is defective, what would I do if I had to replace it? The miles would not be correct....Thanks

The computer keeps track of your mileage. And the VSS is what tells the computer and the speedomter and the odometer what to do.

The garbled odometer thing is a common problem in 99 (first digital odometer, i think), fix for that is to give your dash a hearty open handed whack, lol. Always works for me. The speedo needle jumping, is probably the sensor that reads the magnet on the differential in the tranny, or a shorted wire or connection somewhere between the sensor and the dash. I doubt it has to do with the computer, if the computer was fried you'd have more problems than just a jumping speedo and a garbled odometer.
First off, thanks for the replies. They are very helpful. I have a few questions. What is the VSS? I'm assuming vehicle speed sensor...?? I will take a look at it tomorrow and see if I can find the speed sensor. Hopefully they aren't too expensive, I'm short on cash :-) Anyway, I will get one tomorrow and see if that cures the problem. Just looking on the auto parts website, and all the speed sensor are for automatic transmissions. Does the 5 speed manual have one??

Okay, I found one at AutoZone for $49.99. I can't get it until Monday though. I will try that. Is there anythiong else that could be the cause? I was reading up on VSS's and usually the CEL is triggered if it is bad. My CEL hasn't gone on yet.
