Hey guys, been around here for a while but not around much..but i need your help again. I got a 95 cavalier (for free) but the clutch went out of it. There are problems i thought i would mention though first since i seen this may be a common problem: The clutch fluid liked to leak a little. Every couple weeks I had to put fluid in it. (only did a few times, ex girlfriends car). When she was drivin down for prom, i guess she said she shifted into fourth and when she pushed the gas in it just reved up. So she stopped and tried to take off again and no go. Im wondering if the clutch went out because of the leaking fluid? Is it even the clutch thats out? Theres no doubt in my mind but i learn new things every day i guess.
So I am curious what you guys think is wrong with this car, but my main question as well is if it is the clutch: how do i go about changing it?
Ryan
Well, if it ran out of fluid than the gears would not engage, but running out of fluid would not casue the clutch to break. If anyting, you might have to replace the slave cylinder that is of course mounted inside the transmission. The slave engages and disengages the gears in your transmission, and if there is no fluid, then it may have been wrecked. You also might have to replace your master cylinder for the clutch. If you have to replace the slave cylinder, you might as well replace the clutch assembly also, since you are going to have the transmission out of the car anyway. Dpends on how many the current clutch has on it, and if it was ever replaced. My suggestion is to just repalce it, unless it only has like 10,000 miles on it.

The way she always could tell was you had to push the clutch to the floor to shift, and it engaged the gears if you let the clutch out more than ~1 inch. Its the original clutch (they are first owners). 140,000 miles. how much will this stuff run me? And am i going to have to completely remove the transmission from the car to do this?
? Clutch fluid? Is this only in j-body's or american cars becuase my mirage's both of them, never had a place for clutch fluid.
Girls suck, buy a fast car.
if you don't have a place for clutch fluid then you have a cable driven clutch, different cars use different setups.
Ohh so these are hydraulic? I always wondered what the difference was.

Yeah, our cars are a real bitch to work on when it comes to the clutch system. They use a hydralic clutch system. When you depress the clutch petal the fluid goes into your master cylinder which opend the slave cylinder that is located inside of the transmission. The slave cylinder engages and disengages the gears in the transmission. On a mechanical clutch set up, like the RETARD above posted, you have a throw out bearing. When you depress the clutch petal on a mechanical clutch set up, you force open a spring that engages and disengages the gears in the transmission. As far as replacing anything, a clutch you will have to remove the transmission, and a factory set up will cost you about 150.00 or so. It will come with a new pressure plate, disc plate, and a new slave cylinder. If you want to replace the slave, you are still going to have to remove the transmission. So if either of these are the problem, that bitch is gonna have to come out. I'm not sure about replacing the master cylinder at all though. I think that you can do that without even touching the transmission at all. Who knows, I could be out of my mind and not even know what I am talking about as far as diagnosing your problem. But with 140,000 miles , you might want to consider a new one. I replaced the one in my 99 Z at 60,000. Hope I helped.

Your obviously not here to help this guy out with his clutch problem, so unless you know what he is talking about or have any info to help him out, don't post your stupid comments, because nobody cares at all to see them or read them.
As far as calling me names over the internet, your real cool. I feel so hurt.

Thank you sir, ill probably go talk to the shop tomorrow and see what it will cost me for clutch and slave cylinder. Shouldnt be too hard to take the tranny out. i have half the car already torn apart (rebuilding). Why can't i edit my posts?
Not avaliable unless you are premium, as far as editing posts. If you are going to replace the clutch, be very carefull and do alot of research if you are going to go with a high performace clutch. Such as an ACT or a clutch masters, they require some special hardware and may cause problems, I found out the hard way, when I ordered an ACT clutch for my 99 Z-24. I now have a 400.00 paper wieght.

oh that kinda...sucks. and yeah im going to stick with the stock form clutch. thanks for all the help man
shop told me 250. he told me though that he couldnt get the clutch itself without going to the dealership, this came with a bunch of things.

, I didn't get my clutch form a dealership, but then again I didn't have a dealership replace the clutch either. I'm buddies with a guy that has his iwn car garage and he put it in for me. You can get one at like carquest or napa. They wonlt cost as much as a dealership will cost you. You might even be able to get the entire set up off of GM Parts direct if you don't need the car ASAP. That you way can get them at a cheaper rate. All you need are the part numbers. Are you haveing a dealership fix the car for you anyway. And how much otherstuff were you refering to?

Check out Carcustoms.net, they have aftermarket sport clutchs which go for cheaper then the dealer.
Come on people the slave cylinder engages and disengages the CLUTCH not the gears in your tranny.
here learn something
Hey,
The clutch master is easy to replace. You unclip the rod from the pedal in the car, and under the hood you follow the hydraulic line to the tranny, undo the little c clip and put it apart from the slave!!
I did that first before pulling the tranny out. The source of my agony was a broken spring in the clutch!! Oh well it is all better now............... $ 700 later!!
Good luck and keep us posted!!

hey guys back again, project keeps getting pushed back but i have a question. i keep seeing that the 95 tranny is not the same as the others of the same body style.. why not? is the clutch different? someone on ebay told me that his clutch for a 94 cavalier would fit mine but i didnt purchase it for a couple reasons... I had no clue if he was right... and if it did fit, why was it half the cost of the ones i find for 95-99 cavaliers?

Well, i am not sure if they had two different tranny types in 95 but there are 2 different types of transmissions that are used in our cars. There is either a getrag tranny or an izuzu tranny, each has its own pros and cons depending on which one you have. some people prefer the getrag over the Izuzu, some the other way around. As far as the clutch from a 94 fitting into the car i am not 100% sure on, unless the car that he is getting it from is the same engine and tranny as your is. If it is from a 94 cavalier, than chances are that it is not right considering that they didn't use the 2.3 quad 4 in the cavaliers in 94, they only used it in 95. The tranny might be the same set up so it might work, but i don't know for sure.

i have a 2.2 though, did they use that in the 94 cav?
Duh, I didn't realize that you didn't have a Z-24. Yeah, they used it the 94 cavaliers. They used that engine for a long time. They used it up till 2002 I beleive, then the ecotec replaced it. The clutch should fit then considering that they are the same motor and most likely the same tranny.
