Changing accesorie belt.
Saturday, October 15, 2005 12:42 PM
96 Sunfire 2.2 5 speed

The belt was squeeling so I decided to spray it with some of that belt spray to make it stick... well I didnt have any of that left, none at all actually. So I was thinking on what I could use because I didnt want to make a trip to a parts store to get spray. I figured hair spray would act the same way... well the belt slipped off. Now Im trying to put it back on but having a hard time with it. Ive got it set up right, the right way but there is no alternator tension bracket that I can see. I took the alternator off and there isnt one. I did notice that when I took the top bolt out the alternator would slide forward about an inch or half an inch but that wasnt enough. Whats the best way to put the belt back on?

never changed the belt on my cav, but my wife's corolla has a hole in one of the pulley's for an allen wrench to go in to. feel around where the belt goes and see if you can feel an ident for a wrench.

and since is already off, don't jimmy-rig your car. just go buy a new belt.

No. Where should I look/ I looked at/felt around the slack wheel things, the ones that dont use the tread and basically just take up slack. Btw this is pissing me off.

it should be in the center part of one of the pulley's. i don't know where else to tell you to look. its probably gonna pretty much feel like a bolt. maybe try taking off your front tire and fenderwell cover so you can get a better look.

damn, i don't remember how big it was for my wife's car. it hurts like hell to keep the tension on, so once you find it, put the allen wrench in and then use a big closed end wrench around the allen wrench for some leverage. a second person would be really helpful. once i found the tensioner on my wife's car, my brother and i had it on in about 20 seconds. its a pain with one person.

there's an EXTREMELY unsafe way to do it really easily, but i'm not going to post it in an open/public chatboard. if you cant find a tensioner and have no other clue on how to get it on, email me and i'll see what i can do. but if you email me in 2 minutes i'll just email you back and tell you that you didn't try hard enough and to go look some more. so take your time and try to find the right way to do it.

There is no bolt with an allen wrench head. There is one bold on the upper free spinning wheel but I cant get to that because the motor mount is in the way. This sucks. I just about @!#$ myself when it all went on nicely with no extra slack... then I saw why... it had went behind one o fthe pulleys instead of on it soo...

Is there a free online manual or something I can look at? All I need to know is how to adjust the tension on this damn thing and Im good to go... but really thats all there is to it lol.

well damn. if you really can't get it, shoot me an email and i'll tell you how i used to do it with my camaro.

keep in mind that it is very dangerous, might not work, and i've never done it on a 4cyl car so i don't know how difficult it'll be on an engine facing the wrong way. and if i see you telling other people how to do it using my instructions i'll be super pissed...

I can pretty much guess what your going to tell me. If it involves the engine running, the belt pre installed just needs the last part on, and a screw driver or some kind of pry bar then Im not going to try it. As I said, I have huge arms, and I value them so why risk getting them ripped off?

"dont use belt dressing on a serpentine system" I know that now, but I learned it on my own, thanks. Got any helpfull advce that might actually solve my problem and not point out the obvious?

Yea... there is a sticker of that diagram on the bottom of my hood. But there is no sticker saying "look here retard" for a tensioner

since you're the one that posted the info, not me. i dont have to worry about legal crap if something happens now. don't start it, just get someone to "bump" the ignition. turn the key to on position and then just kinda click the key forward real quick a few times.

Well, in no way am I trying that. Only a tard woul do that. For such a popular car, and I mean popular because I see one at least every 10 mins, nobody knows a damn thing about the acc belt.
