HELP car wont move.
Monday, October 03, 2005 10:19 AM
Well i have a 96 cavalier 5 speed 2.2ohv. I checked all the fulids, spark plugs, wires. i dont know what is wrong can someone lead me in some kinda direction. OK the car was running ok then i all of a sudden got a oil leak between the tranny anbd the oil pan. i was ok with taht because it seemed ok like i woul djust throw a quart of oil in every 2-3weeks. but then im on the highway and my car start like misfiring real bad. everytime i go to hit the gas it would sort of die would let me go sometimes but then it would die again. i drove it to the first parking lot i could find. and it died as i pulled in. then it would not start for like 5 min. then it would start again and would sound like i had real loopy cams, would idle down to 500rpm then to like 1k but right back down and it would stay at like 500rpms and would run for like 10 min then die. now when it was running i would try to move it but got nothing. i would hit the gas and it would bog down almost dieing. so right now i dont have a clue what is wrong with it. any ideas?

check your fuel pressure sound like your fuel pump is going or fuel filter is clogged,or your fuel reg is bad.

Could be a timing chain issue? When my Buick;s timing chain/magnet started to go, the car would hold an awkward idle, it sometimes wouldn't want to go, sometimes wouldn't start, etc.

those are the exact same symptoms I had when my fuel pump went bad. I'm almost positive there isn't a port on our fuel rails to check fuel pressure, but disconnect the line to the rail if you want, if your covered in gas, it may not be the pump. I replaced the in tank pump, but some people have said they just bought an in-line pump for 100$ and it worked fine. I paid 220 for a new pump... Anyways, it was my first time doing it and alone it took me about 5 hours, with alot of problems emptying the tank and getting it down, but with someone helping, it's so much easier. Then again I got distracted by the woman and her friend, so it might not take that long.

there can be many reasons.. you could have run out of enough oil to scorch the cylinders and send unburnt fuel into your oil from all the startups.. could be simple prob with a fuel pump(most likely).

the cheapest way and to get to action would be to goto an autowreckers and take a fuel filter and pump ($10 can cost more depending on the wrecker) yourself. if you have a friend that is an automechanic he can offer advice or take a quick look at it. i'm not sure how to take those out.
i hope its not a ground problem. that could also cause stalling.
check for vacumme leaks and such. (ohh i hate doing that kind of stuff)

Hows the compression? Its possible you have bad rings or a blown head gasket causing low compression on some of the cylinders. This could cause the problem.

ok, for the broken fitting, if their completely rusted together, try either 2 wrenches, or what I did, a vise grip on one, wrench on the other. they should loosen up. throw in some 10w-40. If you still cant get them to budge, you can cut the fuel line and get an adapter at any murrays/autozone/pep boys. post back on how things are looking.

ok i got a new fuel filter. but i could not get the bolted side of the filter off so i ripped the old filter out. it broke. not the line just the filter so now i am all set besides getting the peice the the line screws into off the line (if trhat makes since) nothing is broken just stuck. the fuel line bolt got striped i can get it off with vise scrips they slip righ off. now when i took the fuel filter off it was all brown and looked dirty inside. could this be the problem? or am i lookin at something bigger? to answer another question when i start the car it like loops bad sounding liek i have cams. i go under the hood and the TB is like suckin in some serious air like sounds like a turbo spool. any body got any ideas? im ready to dump this junk @!#$ of a car and move on but if i can fix it i would rather do that

I think you need to have a professional look at it, it sounds like it could be allot of things, some expensive to fix, some cheap. best bet is to have someone look at it. and then price it out for parts and fix it yourself.

Check your sparkplugs. Are they in good condition? Are they in their tight? And as I said before check your cylinder compression. Low pressure in the combustion chamber will make the car lope.
