Hey guys! ive got a 96 cavalier ls with the 2.2 in it...couple months ago it started to run like crap and so since i work at Tires Plus i had the mechanics look at it and run diagnostics on the car it showed that the number 1 cylinder was missing...since i had just put new plugs and wires in (properly gapped) it was weird...the mechanic messed around on the computer and shut off the number one injector and the car ran the same...so we replaced the injector and the car still ran the same...we took the ignition module out and took it to napa to get it bench tested and it failed so i replaced that also and the car still runs the same. im wondering if someone is having the same problem or if someone had the same problem and can tell me what is happening. PLEASE HELP ME!!!
i have that problem but i am miss firring in all cylinders, replaced alot of sensors now and still the same.i dont know really what to tell you on that one.i had it diognosted down to the cam sensor and that wasn't the problem.
did you check your valves or springs lately? bc I had the same problem and it turns out that I broke my valve spring and bent the valve and broke the valve guide in it.

that or one of your coil packs could have lost its ground.
I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.
we changed out coils and it still didnt help...i forgot to mention that the car normally only does this when im at a stoplight or idleling...and it does it worse when its hot out...odd i know lol please help!!
is the engine mechanially good?........compression?
th cylinder sleeves could be melted . how hard do you run it . do you watch the temp
I am unfamilair with 2.2 as my 2.4 doesn't have plug wires, but have you checked for spark at #1 cylinder and resistance of the plug wire?
Had that prob, It's probably your "Crank Position Sensor"
What brand plugs and wires are you using. I've seen problems like this from using cheap autolite plugs and wires. Did the problem exist before the new plugs?
josh
compression was good and ive never had the tempurature go above normal operating range...and spark is good...i had it in the shop two different times...plug wires were from napa and have a 3 year warranty...plugs are bosch platinum (lol yea i know ive heard bad things) but all other cylinders fire properly...eriC was the crankshaft position sensor hard to replace?!
I had the same problem about two weeks ago. Had just put in new plugs and wires. Bosch platinum plugs and a/c delco wires. Missfire was on cylinder #2. Same symptoms as yours. Replaced all the plugs w/ delcos and the problem went away immediately. Not trying to be rude, but why not not check the things you did to the car BEFORE it started to run badly first?
Either way, hope you find the problem.

Actually i changed the plugs back in november...then around june it started to run poorly so i changed plugs and wires, so it wasnt either of those that is making my car run bad...i changed them to see if thats what was making my car run bad lol but thanks for the suggestion, ive heard a bunch of bad things about the bosch plugs so maybe ill try to change them tomorrow...i get parts for cost+10% because of where i work
i love it lol keep the suggestions comin people!...also i need to know how hard it is to change the crankshaft position sensor...thanks!
Cheapest thing, in my opinion, is to replace that plug...
(Sometime they just won't fire much at all due to factory
defect)
would check crank shaft position sensor
i have 97 2.2l had same problem. # 4 cyl
Had the same issue about a year ago. Changes the fuel injector, done.
Cost me $70 and 45 minutes of time.
Matt - It takes about 5 mins to change that sensor. It better to reach it from the top, but you'll need a long entension.
how much was the crankshaft position sensor? i looked it up on napa and it says its like $100...how much did you guys pay for it
Not sure how much mine was, since I bought it almost 3 years ago. But it's not that hard to replace it.
alright thanks guys, im gunna replace mine today and ill post back and tell you if i fixed it!
Seriously, change out those bosch plugs, that was probably the worst thing you could have done to your car, they dont even last long, to high of resistance.JUNK
I've used bosch +4 for years and I never had any probs, plus didn't the 2.4L come with 'em stock?
hey eriC how did you get to the Crank Position sensor? i looked for about an hour today and couldnt really find a good way to get to it...the engine compartment is always so crammed it looks like the only way to get to it would be from underneath...how did you do it?.
I got to it from the right side (drivers side). Remove the intake, stock or aftermarket, and it's more accessible. And you will need a long extension.
