Hi,
I have a Oldsmobile Firenza 87 4cyl since 2000 and it works fine until now, the problem change from a stalling motor (after some minutes) at the beginning of the summer to a #12 error code during summer to a weird problem now(I successfully start my motor only 1 time in the past month).
when I put my key on, the radiator fan start for 2 sec and stop for less than a second showing the service engine soon light and start the radiator fan on again, doing this again and again until i get my key off.
the motor won't crank, every fuse looks fine, the coolant temp sensor send good voltage (i also tried to change the sensor with a resistance without success), some gas is injected(by the way it's a injector with a computerized distributor), motor can be turned by hand and starter too(did not check if starter run outside of his place),
is anyone have a clue???
thanks
OK for starters 12 is the code the computer telling u NO CODES are present. So now u say the car has the no start issue.OK as long as the car is apparently gettting fuel as u said that should not b a issue, but a fuel pressure check for the fuel pump would b a good idea. But ultimately it could be one of several things,a bad distributor cap(cracked) or ur coil is shot, replace it or the alternator is not supplying enuff voltage for the car to run but it will turn over.So with this is ur voltage 13.5 to 14 volts if so rule that out, u will have to pull the distributor cap off and check for cracks or burn spots, which means its DEAD,then if the coil is the original REPLACE it, typically the coil would cause the no start issue meaning NO FIRE to the plugs.Check and or replace these inexpensive parts and let me know by posting ur outcome.I am a true OLDSCHOOL j owner and know these cars pretty good.OK
Hi, after some time with a MITCHELL SERVICE BOOK with no clear result, the problem is still intermittent and I decided to check if there was any corrosive deposit in the ECM... everything leading to this little crap. NO corrosion evidence but when disassembling the ECM from his case the radiator fan stop working and the car seems to be fine... until I left the board off my hand... it seem there a problem on the board itself...
is anyone knows the price for a used ECM before I make some call???
2.0L
4cyl
injection(not carburetor)
ignition module(not mechanical distributor)
thanks
Ok so you think the ecm is going or has a bad circuit.First I did a quick check on advanceautoparts.com and for a base firenza with the 2.0 the price for a oem reman ecm was 83.00.But u will need to be VERY specific on the ecm bc depending on which engine it actually has bc there were several variations b4 u buy one, check the eng code on ur vin # to verify or if u just know for fact which one will help u get the correct part.Second ECMs remaned do NOT come with the prom, calpak,or mem-cal.This is inside the computer and U have to CAREFULLY remove these and reinstall in the new ecm!!!!!GO buy urself a haynes repair manual 1982-1994 product number 38015 this has pictures and a detailed word for word on how to remove these and reinstall in a new ecm.The prom, calpak, memcal tell the computer the EXACT info about the car like weight, engine, transaxle, axle ratio very important stuff so the car runs to those specs. Please be carefull and buy the above manual at any advance or auto zone or retailer with haynes for the JBODY cars and the info u will need is in chapter 6 emissions adn engine control systems.OK sorry to b so technical but, with out this the car would never run.
