hello everyone,

i'm driving home , my gear was still on DRIVE mode when i stop at the red traffic light - engine just die without any sign of engine loosing its power - it 's like the electrical supply just cut OFF . When i tried turn ON the key to oFF then ON again , it start /crank again .I was able to went home , i have a new alternator and a battery replaced the next day .
Few weeks later , same thing happened again .It electrical system just die . .
What other areas i need to look into , the mechanic said it was the ignition module or the computer itself has the problem but grrrr they cannot confirm....Pls. help to advise how to check further if the ignition module and the computer is the problem. Can anyone share some schematic diagram for 1996 a chevrolet cavalier 2.4 L T146
Because i need to make sure that these are the problem so i can place an order.
I need also the exact OEM part number for the two items.

thks and regards,

As for the car cutting off while coming to a stop. It's the TCC swith(torque convertor clutch, switch). Its mounted on the transmission and what happens is the switch is sticking causing the car to stall. All u have to do is replace that switch and a transmission fluid change is a MUST.Change the fluid and u will be fine.IF u do not change the trans fluid the old fluid will fry ur new switch bc it is getting TOO hot and fries the tcc switch. This is not a uncommon problem in jbodys with automatic trans.OK

Thks for the response..
There were times that when i start the car key to ON position it does'nt do anything (no crank sound at all ) ,battery full , alternator ok. i checked A/T shift cble gear that is mounted on that TCC , rubber part is worn out . I don't any spare yet , i made a temporary fixed . Now it is cranking but there's NO electricity coming out of the coil -> spark plug. i chcked the coil resistance is still good, about 12k ohms . In my location , there is no service center here that have this special tools ,OBD scan , etc. to check the ignition ,computer module. functionality so i'm relying only to all of you guys to fixed my problem.

Do you think that my current problem of not firing up was still related to that TCC switch .
I will check the TCC switch also.

Hi i have a 1997 z 2.4 auto. My car is doing about the same thing, i had noticed it right after i had taken it top a local shop to get the trans flued changed.what it does is that more so when it is cold the car will go but feel like it is hessatent to go. and when i stop at a light or stop sign it revs up and down like it is wanting to cut off, but it more so does it when it is cold and not as often when hot. Would this be the same switch or could somthing else be wrong. I really need help.thanx Dj

Yes DJ this would cause ur idle to go balistic.Change that switch out.A simple thing to do is just disconnect it (it will not harm the car) and try it while its cold.IF the symptoms go away that's the problem.Just buy a new tcc switch and since ur trans fluid is new I would not change it again unless its been alot of miles. The only thing u may notice with the switch disconn is lower mpg thats all,but do not recom it for long term use like that.

Not sure on the exact location on ur 97cav,but I am just about sure a haynes manual for ur yr model should show it,if not maybe someone else knows the exact location.I know it has two wires with a plug going into the switch.I do not have a manual for the third gen cavs at least YET.OK sometimes u can go into chat in the general forum and ask I am bout sure some one with a 3rd gen would KNOW.
