What the heck?!
I was thinking of switching to a high milage oil for this oil change..I figured that it was
worth a try. And since the cav ran on QS since like, forever, I was going to use
the same brand.
So I go to pick some up,and it says " now with Slick 50". If memory serves me right,
wasn't there some kind of big problem with that stuff?
I was thinking maybe either Maxlife or Castrol high milage....
though when I ran castrol HM in the Neon a few years back, not only did it burn it
up, the oil got dirty even faster.
I'm just looking to keep this 3.1 oil cleaner and give it some more protection...
my cousin runs valvoline maxlife in both his vehicles(98 ss camaro & 72 chevy shortbox 4x4 pickup) and he swears by the stuff.... hes also a lead mechanic at a GM Service plus shop. so i tend to listen to what he has to say.
idk, i have about 19,000 miles on my 02 s/f and use mobil 1 full synthetic,
but
in my 87 cavalier with 104,000 miles i just did an oil change with the Valvoline Max Life about 2 hours ago.... and only drove it about 10 miles so far so i have no clue.
I guess we will see what happens

I use Maxlife in both of my J's, 10w30 in the Sunbird, and 5w30 Synthetic in the Sunfire GT, its good oil, i used to put it in my mom's Lumina. As for the slick 50, stay away, as its not good for the engine's components, teflon was good for frying pans, not engines.
yeah slick 50 clogged up my oil pick up screen on my my old 95 Z-28... i saw the oil preasure drop and engine temp went up a lil and my engine light was on... so i brought it to the dealer and they told me it was the slick 50.... after getting dicked around by slick 50 for about 16 months i got all my money back that i paid the dealer and my attorney..... but that is just my one and only experiance with it so take it as you will.

With as old as the engine is, I'd have oil everywhere....I know it burns a little oil..
so I'm sure it would find leaks...

Let me know how it goes...how did it run?
I never got the chance to use it in my old 87...
quaker state..would you put something that sounds like QUAKER OATS in your car..i wouln't..mobil 1..stick with it
I have been changing my Mobil 1 every 10k miles in 3 cars. All from the second oil change of the engines life. A toyota 4x4 with 287k miles on it, and Chevy lumina 3.1l with around 220k on it, and now the cavalier which has about 28k on it. I plan to change the cavaliers oil every 15k instead of 10k, because of the new formula.
The color of the motor oil does not relate to the life of the oil.
The key to a long and safe oil change interval is to make sure that you have a clean, well sealed Engine Air Filter cleaner. Paper filters much better then cotton guaze or foam, so dont be fooled.
For tests on oil life, air filter and oil filter relation, and secific application testing, check out this website:
http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi
This site is a forum that is dedicated to engine oils and oil filters/air filters, and they do many tests on engine oil life and engine oil related topics.
They will also show you through testing how things like "SUV" formula oils, "Slick 50" and other products are simply nothing but a marketing ploy.

again, car is too old for Mobil 1. I'd have leaks everywhere...
I'm not a big fan of quaker state myself, but it's wht the car has run on from the previous
owners..
