Hi,
When starting my 01 cavalier, the starter makes a very loud grinding/scraping sound. At times, the car will not even do anything when turning the key all the way (no clicking, nothing). Then, the only way to get it to start is to turn the key to RUN, shift into neutral, roll a few feet, and when it's rolling then start it. I also just had my starter relay replaced about 2 weeks ago. Obviously the starter needs replacing, but I am wondering what this terrible sound is caused by (starter gear teeth chipping, etc?) I am going to get it fixed in a few days, but does anyone know what this sound means, or has anyone had the same problem?
exactly what you said: gear teeth chipping/ grinding on the gears

sounds like yourstarter is deff shot. but when you say you hav to drift it so it can start
is it an auto or 5spd? if its an auto your gonna need to check the teeth on the flywheel
cause they may be damaged as well. actualy ANY grinding noise is also tearing up the flywheel auto or stick. just make sure you check it. if its torn up bad then i've got some bad news, your gonna have to pull the tranny to replace the flywheel.
good luck.
