Hi all...I've been a member for years but this is my first post.
I've got a 93 Cav RS 2.2 with 144k miles that is driving me crazy!
Never had a problem till about 3 weeks ago and it started hesitating and then stalling.
This will happen warm or cold, highway speed or slow. Sometimes I can drive 30 miles without a problem and other times it will die within a minute of driving. It always starts right back up and then is usually fine for awhile. Before it stalls is usually sorta putts a few seconds and bucks and the tach will jump all over the place, but sometimes it will just turn off with no warning like the key was turned off. Will also lose power right before the stalling, like no matter how much gas I give it , it's an effort to go over 30mph. But other times it runs just fine at all speeds with full power.
These are the things I have tried so far with no luck:
Scanned computer for codes, found nothing wrong.
Changed:
Plugs
Wires
Coil Packs
Ignition Module
Crank Position Sensor
Fuel Filter
O2 sensor
PCV
Unplugged the TCC solenoid
Ran Seafoam through it.
Checked for vacuum leaks.
I've already put alot of $ into trying to fix the problem and it's stumped the local mechanics.
Has anyone else had this same problem or does anyone have any suggestions of what I could try next?
I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!
Kris
Classic symptom of a faulty EGR valve sticking.U should pull it off and clean it with carb cleaner and a wire brush, make sure the pintal inside it moves FREELY up and down. This can happen cold or hot temps and will kill the eng or power.A simple way to see b4 removing it is just to pull the vacumm line off I assume it has one going to it,and if it goes away problem solved. If this does not remedy the problem please let me know,I will think on it some more I have a 2.0 it's a 85 but some what similar to a degree.I hope this solves it if not I will try to help ya out the best I can.
Thanks for the advice. I unplugged and blocked off the EGR Valve but unfortuantely that didn't fix the problem.
The car is now extremely sluggish and I can almost make it start hesitating if I really try to accelerate. Sometimes it idles all over the place, if in Drive (this is an automatic), the idle will flutuate rapidly betwen 700-1200, but shifting to Neutral or Park will make it return to normal. I can hear the fuel pump's sound change as the idle is changing but I don't know if its because the pump is having a problem or because the engine is almost shutting off and then back on, thus turning the pump on and off?
Does this sound like a pump issue or a converter (just a couple years old) or some other sensor that the computer isn't picking up a code from?
Sounds like youre IAC (idle air control valve) has a bit of carbon problems, I would just get some carb cleaner on that as well. If its giving you a code with a check engine light, I would clean it first, Then see if the problem still accures. If some you may need to replace the IAC valve.
Good Luck
I think the IAC mayb a issue as stated in the above post as well.It can affect the idle alot,if u a really OLD convertor I would rule that in but, typically a clogged cat has NO affect on idle what so ever,it would cause the car to have no power but continue to run.If the fuel pump was going the car idle would not fluctuate at all,the car would almost stall alot or cut off repeatedly.U could do a psi check to verify the pump,But I do not feel this is worth checking bc of ur symptoms.Check that IAC prolly gummed with carbon.
Well everytime I think I've fixed it, the problem returns.
In addition to everything I orginally changed, I also cleaned the IAC and replaced the throttle position sensor. It drove fine for 200 miles, then suddenly same thing. It started chugging along, could barely keep it going then it stalled. Restarted right up and a few minutes later repeated started cutting out again, with loud putting from the exhaust, the tach quickly bouncing up and down.
So here is the complete list of everything I've done so far.
Scanned computer for codes, found nothing wrong.

Ran engine treatment through it
Any more ideas?

Wow
I just have to make the list longer
Battery Earth cable-really clean both ends and where it connects to--the engine and the chassis connection
Good hunting anyway

Just based on ur list one thing did come to mind.U may want to check the fuel pressure a psi check to ensure ur fuel pump is not slowly bitting the dust.Another thing u may have a bad injector thats going and while u have run sea foam thru and changed ur fuel filter it can not replace hp.A fuel pump generally goes pretty quick which in turn causes no power surges, sometimes the pump can last but, normally when its going out it does not last 200 miles.I say check those injectors if there the originals there probably shot or near going. That would be my next check and or replacement of each one.Injectors going would create those symptoms and those additives just ease the issue temporarily. If I think of something else I will post it.I do not think its a clogged cat either the car would die all the time, unless ur cat is really old and filled with carbon.
Just thought I'd post a follow-up. It seems the problem has finally been solved. Had the fuel pressure tested and it was fine. However, when the voltage at the pump was checked it was very erratic. Replaced the one part many mechanics talked me out of, they said it should either work or not, but wouldn't be intermittent, the fuel pump.
The car is running better than ever now.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
