Dumb question about brake tools
Wednesday, June 01, 2005 7:13 PM
I'm about to change the front brakes on my 97 Cavy.

What size is the allen wrench for the caliper bolts? I've searched and cannot find a size.

Thanks in advance...

mikec2003,

Thanks very much! I couldn't find a reference for that in any of my Haynes manuals...

Ya, no kidding, that's what I thought too. Then I stuck my head in the wheelwell.

I hate how the carmakers don't use regular fasteners for stuff like this.

It's in my Haynes manual.......chapter on brakes

Ban low-performance cars, not high-performance ones.

look at the design of the caliper bolts and you will see why they can't use a hex bolt. The caliper slides of the the head of the allen head bolt, this is why they use it. Also Gm been using 3/8 caliper bolt heads as long as they have had disc brakes.

As for the torx bit wheel bearings I think they use it for a little more clearence, shorter head? don't really know on those. Maybe its just a case of "I do what I want".

I went out and bought the allen heads that you can fit onto your socket wrench. Makes taking the calipers off way easier. Using the standard L shaped wrenches can be hard to get in there.
