Can I just disconnect the battery and remove the air bags in my 1996 Cavalier? I'll never use them again, they'll be removed for good.
If not, is there a given routine to remove them that needs to be followed?

I think you have to wait a while (20 min) after you disconnect the battery so they don't pop still.
...but why are you getting rid of them for good

I gutted a sunfire a few months ago....
I didnt disconnect the battery... Opened the dash and removed the airbag, unplugged the harness... Same goes for the steering wheel.. I'd say they have a pretty slim chance of them going off, unless you're like a raging lunatic when you pull em.
Just pop em out...
When your all done with em, you can hook them up directly to a car battery and make them blow up...
We were going to scare the @!#$ outta my friend down the shop- hook the airbag up to a power converter, and have it throw voltage when he flipped on the lights... Everyone talked my outta it- but we blew them up outside- very loud.!

ok, hold on, before you permantly disfigure your face from a CARELESS mistake, you might want to do this the proper way. I did this on both airbags in my cav and it's not that hard. Just find a Haynes manual first then follow the directions exactly. If I remember correctly the extra step other than disconnecting the battery is finding all the yellow airbag connectors(the ONLY yellow plugs in your car and I think there is only 2 or 3 of them) and disconnecting them. Just disconnecting the battery will not disarm the system. It is designed with an auxilary deployment method in the event that the car battery is disconnected before the bags have a chance to deploy in a crash. You may not pop the bags without disconnecting the yellow connectors, but it's a stupid chance to take when there isn't that much work involved with doing itthe right way. When all else fails, always ask the haynes manual! lol

Well, I was able to remove both air bags without anything exploding unexpectedly.
I disconnected the battery, disconnected the yellow connectors at all locations, found the box under the passenger side carpeting, got the steering wheel apart to remove the bag there, etc.
BTW, found out the hard way how the dash cover bolts on. Ended up screwing up the cover over the air bag before I found out about the two screws behind the glove compartment. Oh well, don't need the dash cover anyway.

I've currently removed the plastic dash cover and am now removing the heater, A/C, brake booster and master cylinder. I've got the rest of the interior completely gutted with all the stuff in the trash at the Pickering transfer station, not to mention the doors have been removed (I'm keeping them for now).
Once I've finished the rest of the removal under the dash, then I'm going to remove the axles, exhaust system, and wiring, then pull the motor and trans (probably as one unit).
BTW, the doors weigh a ton (manual, not power windows). The car seems very simple and straight forward to take apart (so far).
