Ok guys i really need some help here. i recently had my flywheel and torque converter replaced and when i was driving everything was fine and then my speedometer dropped. so now i don't know how fast i am going but it can't be too fast because the car won't shift into 2nd gear. i have an 1997 cav 2.2 auto trans, so what do you guys or girls think might be the problem. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Was there any other work done when the converter and flywheel were replaced? Do you still have reverse and is there any noises when the tranny goes into gear? It shouldn't affect the tranny shifting but check the Vehicle Speed Sensor Connections. More than likely its internal in the transmission, could be clutches, bands, etc. No way to tell without tearing the tranny apart.

check the VSS. I wouldn't dig in the tranny. If the speedo drop, it's not the final drive since you can still go.

If it's the 3 speed, check the downshift cable to be sure it's plug.

yeah thats a sure sign that the vss is unplugged. Your car may be in "limp" mode

just look around on the tranny for a plug w/ two wires: yellow and purple

ok guys. i replaced my speed sensor and and for a lil bit the car was driving fine again and then my speedometer needle dropped completely and the now the transmission(auto) does'nt shift out of first. does anyone have any kind of idea about what might be going on here. i really have no idea.

Well then it is either an electrical connection for the vss, or again a bad vss, or if it is a reluctance type transducer, the plate maybe loose. In other words its either electrical or mechanical. Since the speedometer is dropping as is the transmission.
Highly unlikely there is anything wrong with the transmission. This is the sort of thing that keeps transmission shops going. They sell you a $2000. plus rebuild for nothing.

If it does turn out to ba abad vss module, how much do you guys think it would cost to get a new one.

You may want to check your wheel speed sensors (ABS) for any problems as well.
