Coolant leak....@ the cap???

Hey all....

I just noticed this not too long ago.... Driving around, get where Im going- and hang around outside the car... I can smell coolant a little bit, so I pop the hood and see thats its gathered @ the lip around the coolant reservior.. (sp?)

It's leaking right at the cap- but the level is never real high- at least by the time I open the hood...

I swapped caps w/ a junker car I had down my shop thinking the seal was bad in it- but it still does it .... I know the cap is designed to vent, So im thinking the coolant is just sneaking right through it...

Does anyone have an idea why the coolant is rising so much to bleed through the cap?
The car doesnt run hot or anything...

Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks!

Try a (new) cap first. Keep a close eye on your temperature. You may have a plugged rad, hose or something that isn't letting your coolant circulate properly. It's likely a pressure buildup in the system that is causing you to have a small leak at the cap if it isn't the cap itself.

I would do a coolant flush asap and replace the cap with a new one.. Sounds like there's some blockage to me.

I think the cap itself is fine... But, i know the coolant is pushing its way through it.... Its definately designed to vent & the rubber gasket on the inside lip of the cap isnt beat up at all...

I just flushed the coolant not too long ago, and i probably put less than 1500 miles on it.

I pulled the tank, and ran a hose through the radiator and let it come out the drain cock...

Is there another way I didn't think about to rinse out the motor itself? Maybe that coolant inlet on the driverside of the motor...?

Does the thermostat have to be open for this to work right..?
