Summary: Mobil 1 and Amsoil 5W-30 were tested on the same car (5.7L Camaro) in mixed highway/city driving. Oil samples were taken every 1,000 miles and sent to a lab for an oil analysis. The Mobil 1 lasted 18,000 miles
with a filter change needed at 12,000 miles. The Amsoil lasted 14,000 miles with no filter change necessary, but thickened up to a 15W40 weight by the end of the test.
Verdict: 3,000 mile oil change intervals are completely unnecessary with these top-grade oils. (However they lasted a little longer because the oil got topped up once in a while). As far as I can tell this test was done very well and the authors seem to be unbiased. As for which oil is better, take your pick. I prefer Mobil 1 because it's cheaper and easier to find.
Personally I never go over 6,000 miles or so on the Mobil 1 that I run.

I have used both Mobil1 and Amsoil, but I am going to stick with Mobil1 now that they have a full synthetic available. Right now I have Amsoil oil and filter in my motor and it is definitley high quality stuff. It has now been 10,000 miles since my last oil and filter change, and the oil is still fairly transparent, and its viscosity still has not changed. Most of those miles are highway which i am sure makes a difference. I'm going to be doing and oil and filter change this weekend and will be switching over to the new Mobil1 full synthetic.

Yeah, 12,000 miles is about 20,000 km, but I wouldn't necessarily try to push it that far. It depends on the engine, driving conditions, etc. so don't think you can just use these exact numbers. The only way to really know when you should change your oil is to send in a sample to get an oil analysis (which costs about as mush as an oil change). Also keep in mind that they did top the oil up once in a while which apparently help a lot. Here is what they recommend you do:
"Based on the results we've got here, we'd recommend 8,000 miles between oil changes on an engine that uses no oil at all, perhaps 10,000 miles on an engine that uses some oil, and 15,000 miles or beyond with a filter change every 5,000 miles. This, of course, isn't any kind of guarantee, and you must evaluate for yourself what your engine requires. One thing we're pretty sure about though: 3,000-mile intervals is a huge waste of resources."

I have too many miles (108k) on my 2.4 to attempt going past 5k miles per change. My oil blackens down quite a bit after the first 1k miles and I usually have to add a quart after about 3k miles. Didn't burn a drop until 80k, then just started burning a quart every 3-5k miles. I switched to Mobil 1 5w-30 (10w-30 in summer) and change oil and filter every 5k miles.
If my engine were newer, I would have tried 10k on the oil.
With that many miles...you might get by in the summer using mobil1's new extended life oil. Probably would be okay that you use 10-30 in the winter and 10-40 in the summer. Remember...a synthetic always outflows the petroleum oil even one weight lower yet protects better than one weight higher in petro too. If your looking for a oil that has great viscosity protection during the summer try redline oil or neo synethetic. It might help out.
No question, both products are superior....
Not having to change oil and filters but about half as often is well worth
the extra cost....

I fear using one of the longer life oils and trying to wait longer to change the oil, that too much gunk would end up in there. Besides, you can't beat Wal-Mart's price on the 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1.

Now, here's my question.
I stopped at a ln auto parts store near my new job to puck up my Mobil 1.....and not only do I see Amsoil in stock, but Royal Purple as well! It was 4.99/qt for Mobil 1 and 5.99/qt for Amsoil and RP. My question is, should I even bother trying wither the Amsoil or Royal Purple?
FYI, I do change my oil every 2k since it was replaced and I want it to be in top shape.

ive heard royal purple is the shiznit, but ive never seen it around here. mobil 1 treats me great, so until i see otherwise thats what im sticking with. i still change my oil every 3k, im anal, i love my car.

I want to change over to synthetic, probably Mobil 1, for my 2000 2.2L. Is there anything special that needs to be done while changing from dino oil (Pennzoil) to synthetic? I'm assuming I just need to let it drain really good before putting in the new oil, but I just want to make sure.

if you change your oil between 2-5k miles there shouldnt be a difference if you use mobil 1 or amsoil if they last over 10k.
And if you're that cheap that you change your oil every 12k miles... you're an idiot.
