I have a 2000 Z24 and today I hit the gas a litlle and a knocking started in my motor I thought it was a rod but it sounds more like its coming from the top of the motor like the exhaust cam or something. Has anyone else had this problem? is it the timing chain or what?
yes it's a 4 cylinder
could be detonation. Try runnin premium gas a few times to see if it goes away. If so try running a colder plug.

my friend had the same promblem cause he always fllored it and he had the 2.4 twin cam engine and he bleqw the engine and it was making a knocking noise hopefully ur engine is blown it might be tho
I am running denso iridium plugs in it
yes it's a 4 cylinder
ok i have the timing cover off and my tensioner is not working i cant even find the spring to it
yes it's a 4 cylinder
sometimes the knocking could come from the tensioner... not really a knock tho more like a tick i think..

If you have access to an OBD-II scanner that has the capability of turning off pistons one at a time, try turning off each piston one at a time. You will be able to determine if it's detonation. If it's a piston rod, you should notice a big difference in the noise for only the piston that is affected.
SoupMan
- and no, 'Soup' in SoupMan does not stand for Soup Up but for 'Soup' as in Lipton 'Soup'. -
dude whats with the
yes its a 4 cylinder is that your sig or what? as for knocking before you do anything extream run higher octane and that will determine if its detonation maybe premium gas or octane booster
the fastest jbody?
Interesting thread - the thing I noted that was interesting was about the 'ticking' noise caused by the tensioner. My car always had this noise (noticeable when it's idling). Never knew what exactly caused it but if it's just the tensioner guess that much isn't anything to worry about then.
i changed my tensioner and it still does the clicking noise anybody know what that is?
worn chain? worn timing gear the ifs can go on...
to check for a spun bearing amps probe the starter with fuel disabled, trigger number 1 and if one of your humps is way higher then the other 3 that is you spun bearing, if they are all the same you are probably ok.
1979 Impala Sport Coupe Aeroback
if you can only hear it when you get on teh gas say about 2500 rpm its probably a spun bearing
