The car: 2001 Sunfire 2.2L/4spd.

Alright before I dig in and replace a compressor, I need to know... are there any common known issues to look at first?

The symptom: Compressor is not engaging(my first thought is the clutch itself). When you turn the AC on, you hear the typical bog/slightly higher idle of the engine, but I can see the center section of the clutch still not moving. Is there not a switch or relay that controls it?
