A few weeks ago my '99 Z24 would randomly stall after pulling slowly at a 90 degree angle into a parking spot.....this would only happen every once in a while.
Now, starting a few days ago, when I come to a red light or stop sign, the car will try to stall out AFTER I let off the brake & press the gas. If I let off the brake & let the car coast out of the stop on its own without pressing the gas, the car does NOT try to stall. It will only try to stall when I start to press the gas pedal to go. If I press too lightly, it will stall out. If I press hard enough, it will hesitate for a second or two & then take off all of a sudden. It does this a little more than half of the time I would say. Sometimes it will take off like normal from a stop.
Cruising on regular streets or the highway is perfectly fine unless I want to try to increase speed all of sudden like trying to pass someone......the car will hesitate if I try to go from 55mph to 65mph.
Does anyone know what this might be? Fuel pump? Fuel filter? Can a failing water pump have anything to do with this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Forgot to mention that my car is an automatic.
That is odd i can't say i have an exact solution for your but if you havent replaced some wear and tear parts for awhile then it cant hurt. Maybe start with your fuel filter then your spark plugs. Also, try to turn some fuel system cleaner through the engine it could be your fuel injectors.....just kind of thinking out loud here
I was thinking the torque convertor solenoid might be going south.Just in a quick summory have u changed your trans fluid and filter lately?Normally with these switches mounted on the trans is they stick and cause the the car to choke,or cut off when coming to a stop,or reverse only.I do not think this is the issue rather a tune up issue, fuel filter,or fuel pump that is weak,or even the tps (throttle position sensor) or injectors might need to be cleaned and are hesistating under a load.Do a full tune up,get ur injectors flushed, change the fuel filter and see if that clears it up.
i have a 2200 with the 3spd. my car did the exact same thing, but my temp gauge in the car would bottom out. the wires going to my coolant temp sensor had bare spots on them and they were rubbing on the top motor mount. i taped them up and it fixed the problem, doesnt stall and the gauge reads fine
Thank you guys for the info. Will be picking up new spark plugs & boots this week to see if that helps at all. First thing I wanted to try though was the fuel filter. I don't have a place to work on the car right now & this is a cheap shop fix so I just dropped the car off at a local shop today called Tuffy Automotive to get the fuel filter replaced. I told the guy the issues the car was having & he said the fuel filter will probably not solve my issue, but they would go ahead & replace it. He said its more likely to be the fuel pump or one of the number of possible sensors.
I left the car there for the day because they were busy & they said they would call when it was ready. Well, the guy just called me back & said he wasn't going to replace the fuel filter because there was no way that it was the problem for my stalling. He said it was the AEM intake with K&N filter that was causing my problem.........WOW. He didn't want to replace the fuel filter & charge me for something that would not help.
He said this intake is trying to push too much air into a little car like this, and its causing the car to not be able to get enough fuel to compensate for the amount of air that is coming in.......and this is the reason why my car is stalling out. They didn't test drive the car....this is the conclusion that he came to by revving the engine in their garage.
I'm looking for another place to take the car now. If the fuel filter doesn't help anything, I'll be doing plugs/boots next. Is there any way to test the fuel pump? I've heard that's an expensive replacement so I'll probably do that if nothing else works.
I don't remember the last time I had the tranny fluid & filter changed.....had to have been several years ago. What sensors are cheap or easy to replace yourself? Is the TPS the one right on the throttle body?.....if so, that looks to be pretty easy?
my 2.2 did this before i redid my head gasket, it started one day i would do the exact same if i eased into the gas it would choke i would have to put my foot into it a little to go, i started with my 02 sensor and it got a little better but it really didnt stop til i replaced my head gasket, runs like a champ nowa days
