My car wouldn't run very well at all and after a week of working on it we decided it was the PCM or ECU or whatever it is called on these cars, anyway we got a new one from a junk yard. Now the car runs great but the gauges are messed up. The speedometer works and the gas gauge works and that's it. the tach does nothing and every warning light is on except for the check engine light. Does this have anything to do with the "new" computer or is it something else?
Getting a ECU from a junk yard is fine, but there are so many variables with it. everyone seems different. You might have a mismatched ECU, and that could be causing it. Check into it more, there should be S?N codes on the units (old and new) or a part number. Also the year s they were made can make them different. Talk to a dealer, and see about a "re-flash". It may be pricey, but can help. If you know of any smaller shops, they will most likely be cheaper, but thats a special job. In the end you can always try a different junk one. Good luck.

Well today we took the ECU back to where we got it and they exchanged it for a different one. The car started right up and runs great but now none of the gauges work at all and all the lights are still on. So i guess Monday it is going to the dealership to see if they can reflash it. The car is a 97 and originally had the 2.2 in it, and someone swapped it for the 2.4 before i bought it. The ECU that was in it was from a 96 cavalier and it worked fine until it went bad, and both of the new ones we have tried have the same serial number as the one that was running it before. but what should i have them program it to be?
