My car started to miss about a week ago. I replaced the already new plugs and wires with new ones again. It ran ok for a day or two then it started missing again. My fuel mileage has gone to crap. It went from 350/400 miles per tank to 200/250 per tank. I think I have a bad fuel injector (that what a few of the techs at my job are suggesting). Im not sure, I have to test them. Im wondering if the injectors for the 95-99 2.2l cavaliers/sunfire are the same as the 00+ 2.2l cavalier/sunfire? I want to go to the junkyard and pull a few injectors out of a couple cavaliers if I do have a bad injector. Should I replace all of them if one is bad or just replace the bad one? The car is my daily driver. It has 208,000 miles on it. A new injector is $100 at orielly. I dont have that to spend on an injector. Also, has anyone replaced the injectors on a 2.2l? Are there special tools needed? How hard is it to replace the injectors? Thanks for the help.

Need a TORX bit to remove the injector hold down plate. Only special tool needed.
as far as the third gen cars go, 95,96, and 97 injectors are the same. 98-02 injectors are the same. you can swap across that line with some fabrication.

I tested the injectors with a vollt meter I just bought. It read 13.3 for all 4 injectors (i wasnt sure what ohm scale to use, so I went with this one). And I put a screw driver on each injector and listened. I heard the ticking from all 4 injectors. It was sputtering/missing while I did this. Does this still sound like a bad injector or something else? Maybe a bad coil pack? Keep in mind I replaced the spark plugs twice and the wires once but I replaced the cylender #3 wire again since the check engine light said it was a #3 misfire. Is there a way to test the coil packs to see if they are bad? Im at a loss. Please help with any suggestions.

I suppose I need to take it to a shop for that. Im guessing that a compression test will tell me if I have a bad cylinder, correct? On the freeway it runs good but idling it feels like its missing. Im just stumped. I dont have the money to take it to a shop and have them fix it. And I dont have the money to keep throwing parts and pieces at it. Someone told me to try cleaning the IAT sensor and port on the throttle body. Would a dirty IAT sensor cause this? This was before the check engine light came on. At the point when I was told to try this, the car was just missing with no check engine light. I have a 56mm 2.3l throttle body from a grand am in it now. One of the techs cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner before I installed it. Has anyone else ever had a problem like this before?

Well I did a compression test. These are the numbers I got: cylinder #1: 150, #2: 120, #3: 62, #4: 122. I did it twice just to double check it. I know number 3 is bad but is it normal for number one to beat 150? Any idea of how long I could get away with driving it this way until I can save the money for a junkyard engine? Its going to be a little tough saving money for an engine when we have a second baby on the way.
