Electrical Problems

98 Sunfire. So my interior lights will not turn on whatsoever. The dome light, map lights, glovebox, and i believe the trunk one too. Also my left side speakers will not kick on. Any input would be amazing. ( btw. My gfs cavalier also has this speaker problem. common maybe? ) Thanks!

Starting to believe it is a BCM... unsure tho.

well the speaket is not.a problem to.be associated with the rest of the faults. the speaket is just bad, so that needs to be replaced. have you gone over all ur fuses?? the ones on the driver side dash and under the hood. start there. i dont think this is a bcm issue since the interior light, i dont thino, are controled through that. i could be very wrong tho on that, so maybe someone can chime in and say so. i would check fuses and then grounds. then grab a scematic and see if the lights are tired into any one power source. the scematic can be found in a normal repair manual, so now maybe time to invest in one. the trunk light im not sure abt since i dont think there on the same circuit, but i can be wrong. i gotta lok at my manual and see if there any common grounds or powers with those and then let u know. but try and chexk the fuses and all grounds and then let us know. goodluck!

So you believe the speakers are just bad? I just found it odd that both the left front and left back don't work lol. I've checked fuses multiple times. The lights used to turn on then after a while they would only sometimes turn on...now nothing. Ill check my grounds tho.

Well, the speakers are controlled through the radio. It isnt rare for the stock speakers to blow out. And I think its more coincidental that the left side stopped working. I dont think they go through the BCM but anything is possible. A quick check would be to hotwire them from the radio and see if they work, if so, then something else is wrong. If you manually turn them on with the switch on the dash, do they come on, or nothing? Im wondering if that switch is bad. I know that does control all the interior lights. If they do turn on with the switch, but not the doors, then the door jamb switches are bad. If they dont turn on by anything, Im wondering if the dimmer switch on the dash is bad, and just not letting any power get to any of the lights.

I don't believe its the switch... since the map lights also don't work..but I know its not the swich since it still dims the cluster. Humm...

Hmm is right. This is a weird one. You may have to get the manual and start tracing wires to see whats going on. Anything more will be alot of guesses.

There is the schematic for the interior lights. Looks like there is some kind of ground off the convenience center that controls all those lights, including the trunk light. Hope that helps ya out. Goodluck man.

Any luck in your pursuit?
I can certainly empathize with you on the frustration caused by the inoperable map/dome/trunk lights. Was told by a mechanic before, that these are all "grounded" through the BCM, (not sure if that is true or not). I know from my experience that once the part of the BCM that controls these functions is fried the only option is to replace the BCM, which means you will have to be "flashed" with all your data from the old BCM in order to work correctly, something most mechanics will divert you to a dealership to fix... it really sucks!
