I just bought an 02 cavalier less than a week ago and the remote works sometimes. It acts like the battery is going dead. Is there a battery in the remote? If so how do I change it?

Use a coin or flat screwdriver to separate the two halves of the remote... then replace the old battery with a new one. It uses a CR2032 or equivalent.
If you have an owners manual, it's described in there.

Cav's also have weak range even with a new battery. My dad can lock his 02 Silverado, with a 7 year old battery from inside his shed, 300' away from the house that the truck is in front of. I can lock mine from about 50' straight line, with a new battery.
mine is barely working at all with a new battery... where is the receiver located in the car?
