Power Window problem - not the motor
Tuesday, June 09, 2009 9:20 PM
so i got home from work and my power window wouldnt go up... i dont mean it tried and stopped halfway up, it didnt even try to move. i let it sit and came back like an hour later and it want up. i figured i would try it out again before buying a new motor (there like $75 in canada) so i tried it again the next day and same, it wouldnt go up. i pulled the plug off the motor and it had 12v. i ran a wire from the battary and it went up STRONG. i put it up and down a few times and it didnt have any problems. i cleaned the contacts in the plug, pluged it back in and hit the switch while giggleing the plug and it wouldn go up. any thoughts?

it occurred to me today at work that it is most likely the ground on the one contact that is supposed to be grounded when the window is going down, would that mean i need a new switch of is that someplace else?

Hi,

The switch is your most likely culprit if you have good 12 v and a good ground to the door.

The wires that feed the door often crack from years of flexing that hardens the copper and causes them to fail. You mentioned you had good 12v . Often people have intermittent door operation due to the wire cracking problem, it will work 3/4 open but not closed or fully open, it is simple the wire changing position and making contact erratically.

Where did you pull your ground and power from on the test run bypassing the switch?

Try clipping a ground wire to the door and then to the chassis and see if that works, if not I'd replace the switch for it also is a historically high fail part of power windows.

Good Luck
Dave

I had previously run 12v from the open terminal in the fuse box under the hood for my power trunk release, when i did that i ran a couple extra wires from the same place for future use, i used that as my power source. I used the mounting bracket inside the door that the 2 screws under the arm rest screw into for the ground. If it was a cracked wire that was causing my issue, i wouldn't it have to be the hot wire that's cracked then i wouldn't have power at the plug? anyways, I'm going to test it tonight to see if its a good ground, if its not, I think its going be the switch, but ill test first.

thanks for the help, I'll keep you updated

Hi,

Just unplug the switch and jump the connector with a piece of wire and see if it works. That would tell you if it is the switch quickly.
