First off i am a mechanic, second this isnt my car.96 Cavi wit a 2.2 odb II, (I drive a 95 blazer), just doing a favor. I get this car with a broken extractor and piece of spark plug already rammed into the head and piston (cranked over with the pieces in #2 cyl). easiest way out is to get a motor.
sounds easy.... a month later (after looking at 6 motors) i get a good motor with a cam sensor. others didnt have one)drop it in go to start it.... starts and stalls. ok i got a theft problem (used to bypass them with resistors in Cadillacs with the pellet in the key instead of the cylinder like this one was). so i rip the colum apart i try to get a resistance from the cylinder nothing usable. take the dashpad off an grease the wire to the cluster now got a blinking theft light. So i do the 10min on and off x3 thing and it runs now. next problem give it any trottle and it chokes. check eng on 3 codes tp, map, and egr codes come to find out that there is no 5v reference at any of the sensors. i have a chilton 95 and under cavi repair manual and wiring refrences from autozone website but i cant find the problem. even went to the extent of getting a computer for it and same thing but dont even idle. i thought there might be a short in the wiring so now i have the engine harness torn apart over the hood to trace wires and resistances back to the pcm. Help please i need to get this POS outa my driveway ihave other work in line and limited space.
Thanks
Or could someone scan a copy of the pcm diagram from a 96 book so i have good references and not ones that i have to piece together first. I can find the problem with the right references
If you switch computers you would have to do a theft relearn agian. Also you can only use a 96 or 97 pcm. Your problem sounds like wiring not the pcm. Are you checking for voltage at the plug or the wires? I just had a problem after putting a new motor in with my iat sensor thowing a code. I had voltage at the wires but not the plug. Changed the plug and been fine since.
I know the tp and map is together in the wire loom possbly egr also. Did you check the plastic loom for breaks in it anywhere. Like you pinched the wires or something while putting the motor back in.
The egr code might also be just be a bad egr or stuck closed. Did you make sure it was all hooked up? Try switching sensors and egr out with the old motor.
FIrst off i changed all the related sensors from the old motor (EGR, map. tps)they were known good sensors (old motor ran fine before the issue). Second i have the whole engine harness disconnected and unraveled all the loom to access the wiring from the pcm to the sensors. there is no 5v anywhere on the pcm. i had the one from the yard matched to the new one and did the theft relearn but i think it would still need a flash for the trans since there is a buzzing of a solenoid at all times with the yard pcm that isnt there with the orig pcm.
It is the pcm that generates the 5v for the sensors? i even went to the extent of trying a 7805 regulator to inject the 5v on the grey wire with it disconnected from the plug at the pcm. and it still wouldnt work the way it should.
Its a shame it idles so perfect but you cant give it any gas.
