Vibration when pressing gas pedal from a stop...
Friday, July 18, 2008 1:49 AM
I just had some work done on my car, and when I got the car back, I noticed something different about the gas pedal. This doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it's probably about 75% of the time. From a stop(stop sign, red light, etc.), I take my foot off the brake & as soon as I press in the gas pedal, I feel a vibration in my foot that seems to travel up to the steering wheel as well & I can feel it in my hands. It's like a vibration feel or almost a feel like something is kinda binding or seizing up. The feeling only lasts for a second, and then its fine. This ONLY occurs after the car is stopped. When I'm driving down the road, the car drives like normal.

I told the shop about it after I got my car back so they told me to bring it back in. The mechanic test drove the car, and surpise surprise, he said he didn't notice it. I had my girlfriend drive the car, and she felt the same thing I did. Does anyone have any ideas of what this might be? Could my brakes be sticking? Something going on with the throttle cable? I'm hoping its an easy fix that I can do myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, the work that I just had done was new timing set, water pump, & thermostat. The only one of those that I think could possibly have anything to do with this new problem would be the timing, but this doesn't sound like a timing issue, does it?

not a mechanic but I would try disconnecting the battery for a while and let the ECM "relearn" after the timing was done.. hope for your sake they didnt screw up something with the timing.. good luck

Yeah, I left the battery disconnected for a few hours, hooked it back up, and the car still does the same thing. I tried that the day after I got the car back.

I've also noticed now that if I give the car some decent gas from a stop, when the auto tranny makes its first shift into 2nd gear, its kind of a hard shift & the gas pedal kinda jumps off my foot real quick when the tranny shifts. This only happens during that first shift.....it doesn't happen when going into any of the other gears.

I guess I'm more concerned about the vibration though. Anyone else have any ideas?

sounds like you might have a bad transmission or motor mount.Put the car in drive, hold the brakes and give it some gas.See if the motor moves around alot.

Ptrblkz24, I was wondering about a bad motor mount too because I forgot to add that every once in a while when I start the car, right when the motor turns over, it kinda gives the car a kick. It's like the whole car jumps back right when the motor turns over. This usually only happens in the morning when the car is started for the first time that day after sitting all night.

Do you hear a clunk when you put the car in drive?Does it vibrate when at a redlight? If it does, put the car in neutral and see if the vibration goes away.It sounds to me like a bad mount.Did u check the upper and lower(dog bone) motor mounts?Maybe when they changed your water pump, they didnt tighten down the mounts properly.Cause they do have to remove those 2 mounts to change the water pump.

The car does vibrate at red lights, mostly when the A/C is on though. I have a Prothane upper mount insert(at least I think I still do....as long as the shop didn't remove the insert before re-installing the upper mount). The car will actually vibrate the most when I'm barely moving & just about to come to a complete stop. When the brakes completely lock at the light, the vibration gets significantly less.

The car did this before I had the water pump & stuff done though. I guess my mounts could have been bad before though. The car is almost 9 years old......original factory mounts & the upper insert has been on there for 4 or 5 years probably.
