I am trying to follow the GM factory service manual to remove the engine/tranny assembly. After all wire connectors, hoses and power steering pump are removed, the rest of the procedure states to install the engine support, pull the axles out of the tranny and drop the suspension support. My question is this, what about the steering rack? Disconnect it at the column or the support since the p/s pump is aside?
I also read some older threads where the engine can be lifted from above and leaving the tranny in place. Sounds like less work. Is the procedure spelled out somewhere? I don't have a car lifting hoist, so everything will be done from under the car when necessary.
Thank you in advance.
There is not directions on here, but if you do not have a car lift then I would not take it out from underneath. We always take motors out from the top. If you have a auto I would say pull motor and tranny together. If you have a manual pull motor and leave tranny.

Can't believe you were the only response. So thanks for the reply. anyway, after looking at what it takes to remove it from the top versus the bottom, I decided the top it is. The car is an automatic. I just could not see myself removing all the stuff related to the suspension cross member on the donor car, put it all back on so I can roll it out and then repeat all that with the recipient car. So after all the connectors, hoses and accessories were removed, I disconnected the a/c compressor and hung it aside. Removed the starter, disconnected the TC, hung the tranny by a hole in the casting, removed all the bolts holding the tranny to the engine, two more bolts at the pass side tail stock bolted to a bracket on the engine and removed the motor mount assembly after the engine was hooked to a hoist. Oh yeah, the dog bone too was removed. Couple of wiggles and out it came. Must note that there are three bolts that bolts the tranny to the oil pan. One of them is actually a stud with a 1-1/2" spacer from the underside. That stud has to come out to be able to have room to swing the engine away from the tranny. Everything was left in, like the axles, rack and tranny. I just hung the tranny from a home made support (2 x 4) and rolled the car out. What a difference in the amount of work required.
Truly no reasont o support the tranny, but you would have been better off taking the tranny out with the motor. Getting the auto tranny lined back up is easier out of the car. Still good job and good luck.

i have an auto and i pulled it pretty easily thru the top... with the tranny left in the car obviously
I pulled the motor out the top on a maual 2.4 it was not hard at all. I left the tranny in the car but it was tight fit, i would suggest taking of the crank pulley before trying to pull it out.
