Car shuts off at every stop?
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 11:06 PM
Today I replaced my alternator only develop a much more serious problem. The car 93 z24 5spd , will start, idle and move but die every time I stop. Lights stay on, power steering goes, some brakes gone kind of die.

I took the car for a 30 minute drive at highway speeds to charge the battery and the second I stopped it died. Then when I got back to city it died at about 10 different lights until I got home. Started fine each time but died each time I stopped. I know I forgot to do an idle relearn but that wouldn't cause this would it? I also remember it dying like this when I left the parts place before installing the new alternator but after boosting the car.

Is this a charging system problem or a fuel problem? My battery died cause of a bad alternator, so i replaced it. Could I have messed something up, accidentally knocked something out? Or are the two unrelated problems that are just happening at the same time?

I haven't been driving my car much recently since I have a bike too. Maybe once a week.
I am desperate since I am supposed to drive this car 1400km this weekend.
Any help would be appreciated.

I had something like this happen before, turned out to be a clogged cat which toasted a few things, mainly the EGR. Can't say for sure, but it could not hurt to check. Maybe take it to a local shop that will do a free inspection to pinpoint the problem, then fix it yourself.

Hope this helps.

this happend to my 92 2.2 i dont know if its the same thing...cuz mine would vibrate really bad as i was coming to the stop...if urs does the same thing right before it dies it could be the same thing wrong with mine...we found out it was a TCV cylenoid. or however you spell that...its in the transmission..and it would drive fine it would start up every time too...but like you said coming to a interesection or even a light it would die on me..thats why id shift into nuetral and keep the gas on it to keep it running..but that might be worth lookin into..those cars are tricky lol...

Does the battery die still? If not i would not say it has anything to do with the charging system but i had something like that going on does it idle fine or rough? Possible a vacuum line has a whole or is off???? thats all i got for you man
