anyone know how to get rid of the horrid OHV lifter tap. its getting anoying as hell. ive tried different weight oils and everything. is there any way to remedy this beside replacing lifters and rockers. or would it just be the lifters that need replacing. and also. if i DO have to go this route can i replace the lifters and rockers with the head still on?? thanks for any help!
The rockers and even the pushrods you can replace with the head on, the lifters, nope. Head gotta come off.
anyone else. it really pisses me off
its pushrod valvetrain noise. it comes with the territory. and

is 100% accurate.

Perhaps one of your rockers is just loose. Probably not, but before you take it all apart, open the valve cover, and see if any of the rockers are loose or move side to side.
Tighten the loose ones, but DO NOT make them tighter then the point that they stop moving around.
Maybe the Back flow valve is shot on your oil filter. Does it still tap when the engine is hot?
Fram oil-filters are notorious for letting dirty oil backflow back into the oil-passages and the pan. If thats what you are using, I'd suggest switching to either Wix or Purolator. I can't remember the Wix PN I use, but the Purolator I use sometimes is the L24011, for the S-10 4.3 V-6, but it has the same mounting flange and threads as our stock filters, and its about an inch longer, so more filtering media, and slightly more oil capacity for the engine. If you want the Wix, just cross-ref the Purolator to that for the Wix PN.
yeah i use wix i HATE everything about fram. i would never buy nor sell one. anyways. the tapping is there constantly its usually quieter when i start it up. goes away at higher RPM and at idle it just sounds horrible. imma check my rockers this weekend prolly ill pull the valve cover off and take a look. this motor has about 90K on it and the old motor i took out had 180K and they bothe make the same noise. its just annoying and it sounds like the damn things gonna throw a rod or something. but i dont know. im thinking of switching to roller rockers here when i can get a good deal on them that should eliminate the noise i would think.
How heavy of an oil have you tried? I'd be tempted to try 10-40 or 15-50.
This may sound dumb, but if you use a larger filter; Would you have to put more oil in to compensate? Just curious.
I have the ticking lifters on mine as well... I have about 72K on mine. I was going to try a heavier weight, I have already tried the high mileage oil. (No change.)

The filter I mentioned might hold 3 or 4 more ounces than the stock filter. Admittedly, its not much, but it certainly can't hurt.
ive tried 5-30 synthetic, regular 5-30 and also 10-30 thats all i was gonna try. would 10-40 or 15-50 hurt the engine at all??
My opinion is that 10-40 or 15-50 will not hurt them at all.
im almost positive its the timing chain, and not the lifters... these engines are notorious for doing that. Ive had to ohv cavs. and both of them made that lifter sound alike noise, i changed the timing chain on both of them, and the sound went away. hower, for some reason it only fixes it for about a year... it always seems to come back.
thats ghey. kinda pisses me off. but if you use a stethescope on the head it comes from the top of the valve cover.

Try the stethescope on the block, seeing as both the timing chain (actually the tensioner is the problem, if you just replace the chain, the noise will come back) and the lifters are in the block and not the head.
I'd do a quick rocker adjustment before anything else.

If you don't have a mechanics stethoscope, a long screwdriver with the handle held to your ear and the blade against the block or whatever else can work. Just be certain that if you have long hair, keep it pulled back and out of the belt, haha, wouldn't wanna scalp yourself accidentally.
yeah i have no access to a stethoscope anymore. but im thinking imma take my rocker off today and see whats up. i know ive checked them and there torqued all the way. what if i tighten them just a bit more??
Dunno if that'd mess up the bearing they ride on or not, probably shouldn't go too much tighter.
Wojo,
I just remebered... Back when I had my '98 Cavy, there was a recall on the valve cover. It was for every model up 'til that point (1999?)
Might the issue be that your '96 was not serviced in that recall? I am not sure what the specifics were on said recall though, maybe it's for an unrelated issue. Just throwing it out there. Any one else know what the recall was for exactly?

I vote for the timing chain as the cause too. Sounds just like it. Quiet at startup, horrible at warm idle.
