Should the fuel gauge on a 1996 Sunfire go to zero with the ignition off and key removed? All mine does is drop a little bit, and i'm having fuel reading issues. Should it be zeroing? Is this indicating a sending unit problem?

i dont know about a 96 going to zero. i have a 2001 and it goes to zero. youre always going to have fuel reading isssues though. the cars are notorious for running out of gas with a 1/4 tank.
Yeah i've heard alot about these issues, will replacing the fuel level sending unit remedy this, or should I not even bother?

well they were crap when the car was brand new so i wouldnt replace it..........unless it just stops working.
i judge my fuel by mileage.
now my beater honda ......that i had could run down almost past E and i NEVER ran out of gas wiht that thing. in fact in no ther car have i ran out of gas.
my 96 does not go to zero when i turn it off it goes to about half a tank. but i am not sure if my sending uint is shot. becuase i can put like 20 bucks in when its just under 1/4 and it will just hit before the full line when i start her up. 20 bucks, litres not gallons. keep in mind i am not trying to fill the tank. just to put 20 bucks in. who think's that sounds irregular?
my 98 doesnt go to E when i turn the key off. it stays where the fuel is. if i have a 1/2 tank, when i turn the car off, it stays at 1/2
X2... I guess when you turn the key to off the needle stays around the real reading and when you switch it on it goes to the accurate reading.
I guess i'm just doing to drive about 300 miles and fill then haha..
