Pretty much what it says. Car is running rich and has a horrible smell with diminished power in lower rpm\s. Pretty sure cat is clogged and I'd like to take the bolts out and try and look up in there at the catalyst itself ( have had rattling in muffler in the past so I suspect it's fairly broken up) Looking at the three bolts, I kinda get weary cause they are so thin, not rusted too bad, but thin. Just kinda wanted a general consensus (sp?) of being able to remove and replace the bolts without them breaking>
Got hurt at work awhile back and havn't had full income for a while so budget is thin. I just want to know if the cat is busted through causing the muffler to clog, or if the cat itself is just screwed. Trying to get out of buying both, budget is thin and school is coming up in august so it's going to be close making tuition as it is. I just want to get the car running a little better without having to wait a few more months. Car is 97 2.4 w/ 156K, so it doesn't need any unessesary stress like clogged exhaust.
If the honeycomb that is the cat is broken up, then it's pretty much useless... and of course it will affect performance. I took my cat off an old dynasty once and beat out as much of the inside as i could with a broom handle, then put it back on. Not the best solution by any means, but it was all I could do as a college student at the time.
Car did run much better tho...
Far as the bolts go, I know mine were in pretty hard shape, and only had 80K miles on it. I would prepare to have to replace them...

I kinda figured. Anyone know off the top of their head what size they are? I've been spraying the bolts down with PB Blaster for the last two days lol. If one breaks I'll probably just have to drill it out and try a larger size bolt, and if that doesn't work I'll just weld the flange.
the bolts, though they may get really rusty, are EXTREMELY robust. i cut aboot 3/4 through one with a sawzall, broke the blade, then decided to give the wrench another try. believe it or not, the bolt didnt break, but rather just came off (very begrudgingly mind you), and i had to replace it ONLY because i had used the sawzall.

if you HAVE to... you could get a piece of straight pipe of slightly larger diameter and a couple of clamps
cut out the old, put in the pipe, clamp it up
will do until you can afford a new cat, and when you do, go aftermarket like a magnaflow which would require cutting anyways...

Bolts are cheap... if you break one, just replace it.... and put in some stainless bolts so they're easier to remove next time... when you fix it properly
