Quick Question? Over heating?
Thursday, June 14, 2007 9:14 PM
My Car overheated last week and I just had the Radiator and thermostat replaced! Now I was just wondering what the gauge should read inside the car and what the normal operating temperature for an 01 Sunfire 2.2L should be?

Thanks Shawn!

90 celcius i think is the temp for a stock thermostat....My question is how do you avoid your car overheating in idle city traffic? Mine doesn't overheat at all in the highway, but if it's slow moving / idle traffic she really heats up...what can I do?

temp should be approx 195. make sure you got all the air out of your system. sometimes it takes awhile.
ryan as far as overheating in traffic, sounds like your cooling fan isn't coming on

get hp tuners and you can change when the fan comes on like i did. mines comes on at 90 and runs for 2 minutes so no problems in traffic.

I just changed the thermostat and radiator fan + radiator fan sensor. now my temp reads just 1 bar over half, which was normally before I had any problems, also ran into the idle or slow traffic heating up. Turns out my radiator fan was broken, check that it could be it, but also check the sensor a new one is only like 16 bucks.

overheating at idle can be a few things

such as not enough water and too much ethylene glycol

since water cools better than the antifreeze does

bad fan or broken or missing shroud

bad water pump

thats really it, for overheating at idle speed anyways

if it was thermostat or radiator the it would do it all the time

good luck

I take it that this is an on going thing with these j-bodies... I thought that I would be of few that have this problem, but I see that its very common amoung these cars. SUCKS..... but hey hopefully we will figure out what is causing this.

Anyhow, if you didnt have enough water to ethylene glycol mixture then it would run hot on you, thus causing the fan not to turn on or waiting so long to turn on?
