is it really nessacary to get new head bolts when taking off the head?
not 100% sure, but yes. i know when changing out suspension (upgrading) you really should get a new locking nut....so my best bet would to do it to be on the safe side..but eh, what do i know just my .02 let someone with knowledge and experience with the head be your guide
Head bolts on our engines are designed to stretch slightly when properly torqued. Once used, they won't work/stretch properly next time in. Haynes doesn't mention this, and in fact directs you to use the old ones again. Chilton's doesn't. Haynes does have better interior repair work help.
They are a $26 insurance policy. I just replace the HG on my Cavy and I wouldn't trust the old bolts. The bolts are torque to yield like stated before they stretch slightly when torqued on. Just get new bolts to ensure you don't have to tear down the head again. Just go to NAPA or someplace for 'em. Napa=$26 Autozone= $38

just put ur old bolts up to a straight edge to see if the are worn.
Yes, replace them... Mine where like 1/8 longer than the replacements....
